s4-r or 1098

this is really my first post of actual substance and here it is.  so this past year i bought a 750 monster and after i rebuilt it and had the time of my life riding it, i decided to sell it though.  it was mainly due to the fact that i really want a 4-valver i really want more speed and power.  right now i am itching to put something back in the garage so i can mod it up for summer.  i only have about 4 months of riding on a bike but a couple years of riding quads, my question for you guys is do you think that i am ready for the power of a 4-valver, and if so what really is the difference between the 1098 and an s4-r as far as power goes.  i know the egros are very different but is there really any power differnce between the s4-r and the 1098.  for the most part i am a pretty resposible rider as far as rules of the road, but i really cant help it when i see and empty straight away or some nice twisties.

The 1098, if I recall correctly, has 160 hp. The S4R has around 120. The 1098 will have better brakes and be far more of an agressive riding position (which may or may not be more comfortable for you).

The 750 could accelerate quicker if you changed out the sprockets, though you'll lose some top end.

4 months is a short period in which to move up in power. How far have you ridden?

If the state had not cut funding for the mental institutions, this project could never have happened.

If your looking to mod... and if you rebuilt the 750, it sounds like you are a gear head... I would go for the S4R. Moding pure sport bikes is not as satisfying, unless you are more into the performance aspect then custom / aesthetic aspect.

Tilt, just based on the limited info of your post, my gut tells me to suggest:  Don't get a 1098.  Please.   :o

An S2R1000 would be a good step up from where you're at and would keep you more than entertained on the road.  And I'll even admit they look better than the 4-valvers (less clutter).

S4 is again a step up on the S2r.  You can handle the S4r no problem, just be careful & cautious.

1098?  Woof.  It's like showing up at Prom with Angelina Jolie as your date.  Nothing better, but would probably kill you.  ;D

You are asking good questions, by the way.  Keep it up and welcome to the board.

I was thinking the other day about what my next bike will be.  I definitely wanted better components, handling, braking, and power but I didnt want a soul-less sportbike like a CBR, R6, or GSX.  So I started thinking... hmm used 848 (1098 is just too much for me financially).

Ironically, while pulling up to the motorcycle lot on campus, i unknowingly parked next to a red 848.  I didnt realize it was an 848 until i started taking my gloves and helmet off.  Dont get me wrong, its a gorgeous bike, but i realized that although its a sexy bike, it kinda blends in with the sea of soul-less sportbikes.  Thats when it struck me...

The styling of the S*R monsters is just emotion provoking.  There is just something cool about how everything is exposed and just how raw the bike looks.  I seriously walk up to my bike everyday with a huge grin on my face.  In that same moment, i realized that my next bike will have to be a monster...

Hopefully in a couple years I will be able to pick up a white/red S4Rs like this one:
(its actually a pic of devilisht2003's bike)

Words cannot describe how hot that bike is.

I think the issue with more power is the temptation to think you can handle it and once you feel the new rush of acceleration you can convince yourself that you will just dip into it now and then .

It's not that easy.

Nobody likes speed more than I do.

I rode an S4Rs ( 4 valver ) for 7 months and then the weather turned cold here in Ohio. I rode a little with heated gear but it's just not the same. Cold pavement , no leaves on the trees, gravel in all the curves, you get the picture.

Well , come Spring and the 3rd time out after 3 months of no riding , I thought I could ride like I did before it got cold and of course I was wanting to feel the rush of the acceleration and I forgot some of my most important rules to ride by like never let your attention stray from what is in front of you and what is ahead .I did and had a major crash.

I didn't ride again for 12 weeks after 2 Surgeries .

I had ordered a 1098R and it was delivered to me the week of my crash.

Of course I couldn't wait to start riding it.

So in Mid June I rode it for the 1st time.

I was scared. I didn't want to kill myself but of all the bikes I sure shouldn't have been riding an 1098R.

I took it real easy and broke the bike in by the book and I've got 2900 miles on the R and to this day I have yet to run the bike past 9,000 rpms.

It's a beast. I have regained my ability to ride like I want to. I ride fast but I don't push it past my comfort zone.

Call me stupid, lucky or cautious.

At age 59 I don't figure I have that many years left to ride a bike like the " R ."

I am the exception not the rule !

Anyway I say go slow and be sensible.

I could have died from my crash and following complications. At least that's what my Surgeon and Primary Care M.D. said.

Take it easy on the power ladder unless you are 59 and your health may mean that your riding days may be fewer that other 59 year olds.   Dolph      :)

If you've only been riding a few months a 1098 is just overkill.  period.

I would pick a monster of any kind over a 1098.  SBK's to me are just massive engines wrapped in plastics with shit ergos - not what I want in a bike.  Call me biased but the Monster is the best bike for me, and I think, just one of the best bikes.  It's far more versatile, costs less, looks better, and is highly moddable.

Consider JohnnyDucati's solid advice on the S2R1000.  That is plenty of bike for a newbie rider.  Which is - don't kid yourself - what you are.

Wow man!!! s4r or 1098? i have an s4r and i tell you, that is all you need! The power, handling, that never get old look of a naked bike....you will ba amaze how that bike can keep up,careful though, the bike can climb up on trees.Poweeeeer!!!!

One more thing to add up,it's much more fun modding a monster,so many little bits to personalize your own taste.Just MHO ;-)RIDE SAFE!

depends what you want.  S4R is silly fast, especially on the naked set up.  It has more power than you need.  You'll be going 140mph before you know it the wind wanting to tear you off the bike but the motor wanting to keep going.  No less, they have dropped in price a lot since all of the new models coming out.  The 1098 is gonna be more uncomfortable and also will feel like it doesn't even belong on the street.  So if you are going to the track, get a 1098, primarily street, I'd vote monster for sure.

+1 on Johny Ducati's advice, an s2r will have plenty of power. Better looking than an s4r too, IMO.

1098? 4 mos experience? I don't know, maybe you're a Rossi-type natural, but to me that sounds like a really bad idea.  :-\

Whatever you do, ride safe.

IMO, the best way to gain speed is by taking yourself to a track school.  An experienced rider on a little 250 could easily dust a less experienced rider on either an S4R or a 1098 in the twisties.

Before you make your mind up between the s4r or a 1098 add another bike to your list and that's a new 1100 monster. I ride both a monster s4rs and a hypermotard which is almost the same running gear as the new 1100 and i find the hypermotard to be quite quick enough plus it's more relaxing than the s4rs which can be a handfull at times.  [moto]

The 1098 has a "Claimed" output of 160hp by Ducati and the S4RS has a "Claimed" 130 hp @ 9500 rpm (same deep dump engine as 999/999s) - rated at 150 hp w/performance exhaust.

The S4RS is more than enough bike. I can keep up with the Jap bikes on my RS anytime.  Besides, like someone here said, you'll have more fun moding the bike over a 1098. I find full fairing bikes cool looking, but only for a minute. Go for the S4R friend. I never get tired of looking at my bike.

Costco. They are about 70 bucks a box. They are a plastic material and very cheap. So cheap that I just wanted a strip to work on my bikes, but did the whole garage.
