do you take belts of too check valve clearances cheers bazz

Yes.  As part of the process -you need to rotate the cam by hand to check for binding.

I went through this a few months ago. See my thread I hope it clarifies a little bit. My closing statements are on page 2. The belts need to be taken off primarily for the closers.

No, to check clearance you do not have to remove the belts.  You only have to remove the belts when you are adjusting the closers and when you want to obtain a clearance close to "0".

It's very seldom that I see closers that don't need adjustment, so I always take the belts off.
