Paula's bike.

To date:

Check engine light that come on at a stop light, then disappears (happened once)
Engine temperature randomly jumps around.

Nothing else of note, but apparently bike is acting hinky. Battery voltage is okay. Charging systems appears to be fine (voltage within spec when running, anyways).

18k on bike.

I'm wondering if this is a corrosion issue, and perhaps cleaning all electrical connections then coating in dielectric grease is in order (bike sees a lot of rain use).

Other suggestions?
If the state had not cut funding for the mental institutions, this project could never have happened.

Start by unplugging, then repluggling electrical connectors. This will wipe some of the corrison on the contacts if any. Check your battery connection at the battery AND where they end up. Wouldnt hurt to shine up the battery cables where they go to the fuse box and engine ground

The best place to start is get diagnostic tool on the bike, either factory or VDST software.  This can save you hours of work.

07 ? if it still has warranty I would get it to a shop as the dash may be failing. you do not want to have to pay for a dash.  $$$

First, I agree with ducvet.  Even if the bike is recently out of warranty DNA may do something if it is the dash.

Chris Kelley sells the VDSTS software, plus he knows the product.

Hinky

I really like that word.          h i n k y    h i n k y    h i n k y

Did you know that etymologist aren't sure where "hinky" came from.          H I N K Y

There are 2 theories.          H I N K Y

1, it's an alteration of "hincty". But how it went from hincty, a 1920's word for "snobbish," to a 1950's word for "suspicious" noone's sure.
hinky

2, in the OED there is "hink," which is an old Scots noun meaning "a hesitation or a misgiving," and a verb meaning "to limp or falter." But there is no evidence of how it got from then to now.

h             y
    i      k
       n
    i      k
h             y

I guess I've been reading too much Word Detective.          H I N K Y

Sorry I don't really have anything constructive to say about your electrical problem, other than:

hinky, hinky, hinky, hinky, hinky, hinky, hinky, hinky, hinky, hinky, hinky, hinky, hinky, hinky, hinky, hinky, hinky, hinky, hinky, hinky, hinky, hinky, hinky, hinky, hinky, hinky, hinky, hinky, hinky, hinky, hinky, hinky, hinky, hinky, hinky, hinky, hinky, hinky, hinky, hinky, hinky, hinky, hinky, hinky, hinky, hinky, hinky, hinky,

I disagree.
That may have been the most productive response I have  heard in a while, brought a tear to my eye. [clap]

cloud2blue did educate us in the etymology and usage of the word "hinky" though [clap] [clap] [clap] [clap] and thank you.

Now I will be thinking about "hinky" everytime I see the gremlins on my rides! ;D

Check the connector down at the oil temp sensor on the screen plug.

Is there condensation on the 'glass' in the instruments?

Nope.

Visually it looked ok, but I gave it a little extra push in this morning and my temps were far more stable today. [thumbsup]  Guess we have narrowed down which one is due for some cleaning and grease.  Could this same one cause the Check Engine light to come on sporadically?

On the oil temp sensor, the rubber boot is a cover, it's not actually connected to the electrical plug, so it can look good but be poorly connected.

I wouldn't think it would cause the Check Engine light to come on.
