I visited my local liquor store today.  I came home with

Old Weller 107 (recommended by a previous poster)
1792 Ridgemont Reserve

Airplane of Johnny Walker Black.

Tonight I shall be doing some taste testing.

May the tasting begin!

Mr. Walker is up first!

Half-cocked on the Old Weller 107 as I type.  Man, I can't believe how strong and smooth it is for the price  [drool]

B and I will definately checking some of these recommendations out.

So far, we like:

Blanton's
Elija Craig
Glenlivet 12 and 15
Tuthilltown Hudson Manhattan Rye (and River Rum)

and can't seem to finish:

Buffalo Trace
'01 ST4 Yellow
'02 ST4s Yellow

Oh, that Buffalo Trace would have been gone quick around here :)

I'll have to give the Bourbon/Scotch rivalary another go, I guess.  We got a new Irish pub in town back when I was in college so I felt obligated to go and try a whole slew of different Scotches, but then again I really wasn't much of a whiskey drinker back then.  I remember trying Speyside (one of the cheaper ones) and maybe Glenmorangie and thinking how...I guess.... sweetish and weak they tasted compared to bourbon.  I think a new winter hobby just presented itself :)

Me and a buddy went halfs on a bottle of Craig 18 last year and being the novice whiskey drinkers we were (3 fingers, neat, no flashing) couldn't stand the shit.  We let our nose hairs grow back and finished the bottle and it was much better when properly prepared.

Now if I could find anyone local who actually likes whiskey......

Just finished a bottle of that myself.  I'm not a straight guy.  I use it for Manhattans, and it works really well.  For Christmas, my brother got me a bottle of Maker's 46...damn.  When I go out I get my Manhattans with Maker's Mark but the 46 puts regular Maker's to shame.  If you like Maker's try and find the 46, I don't think you'll be disappointed.  Just remember, this is in Manhattans and not straight.  YMMV there.

Fixed it for ya!

I didn't read all of the posts because I'm a tequila guy, but I have to say that being stationed in Kentucky has allowed me to go to a few of the distilleries here.  They're worth the trip if you're in the area.

I've always loved Bourbon but lately even more than Bourbon, I love me some Bourbon barrel aged stout! The Odell Imperial is nirvana in a pint glass.

but on the Bourbon note, has anyone done the Bourbon trail? I've been wanting to do it for a while and it'd be a good meeting point for east & west coasters. who's down? are there good roads in Kentucky?

Don't know if there is a rivalry, really.  I find so much more subtlety and complexity with scotch.

The peatier the better.  Caol Ila is my standby, though it's not carried in many establishments.  I often settle for Oban or Talisker.  I tend to shy away from the sweeter of the lot (such as MaCallan), no matter their popularity.  Anybody know any peaty scotches out there to recommend?

That said, I'm shifting towards bourbon because its made stateside, and the prices are so much more reasonable.  I'll save the $ for carbon fiber.

Speaking as an Indiana flatlander, I can tell you that there are only good roads in Kentucky.  Its beautiful country, all mountain tops and fern gullies.  Perfect motorcycle roads.

As to whether or not they should be negotiated on an Italian V-twin torque machine after 'sampling' various bourbons... sounds fun, but I'll leave it up to you, DesomLu.

Ouch!  Took me a minute to see what you "fixed."  As for Manhattans, try one.  Tasty stuff.
If I want straight liquor, I drink rum.  Old, dark rum being my personal preference.

I've spent the last three years learning to enjoy Bourbon.  Previously, pretty much Scotch, Cognac (including other gnacs) and Vodka were my preferred booze.  Blanton's is amongst the best I've tasted.

The rivalry is only in my brain :)
