Headed for MDI in June

Hey all,

It's been a while. How are my peeps doing? I hope all of you are well. Things have been decent for me, I just haven't been doing much online for the past few months. Management at work has really been cracking down as things are slow and layoffs within our parent company have been rampant; goofing off online at work isn't the wisest thing to be doing right now. I don't really go online at home much anymore either. I'm going to work on being around more though; I feel completely out of the loop and I miss you guys.

So the thing that's bringing me back is the fact that I wanted to share the trip Tony and I have planned for the end of June.

We will be leaving town the morning of 6/20 on the bikes and likely head up Rte. 202 all the way through Augusta to Rte. 3 which we will follow all the way to Mt. Desert Island. Once on MDI we will be taking Rte. 102 to 102A all the way to beautiful Southwest Harbor where we will be staying at the Moorings Inn.

This is the room we have booked:

Here's their website in case anyone else is interested in heading out that way sometime. www.mooringsinn.com

We will have all day to get to the inn on Saturday the 20th, taking it easy once we get there. The room has a private deck/patio to hang on and the area itself is soo pretty. Sunday we're going to spend the day romping around the gorgeous roads of Acadia National Park and the rest of the island, resting up at the inn Sunday night, and taking the whole day to get home Monday the 22nd.

I'm scared shitless. I won't have much seat time under my belt before our trip and I didn't get much seat time last season either, so this is going to be quite the undertaking for such a noob. I'm sure I will be fine, as I know all the places we are going; I'm just trying not to weird myself out about it since I'm still a little tipsy on the bike as far as managing the weight in uneven areas. My legs are just too freaking short!  :P

I also ordered some new Fieldsheer gear that I'm excited to try out. The Judy Tex jacket and 4 Season Mesh Pants. The pant reviews I've read included a girl being completely toasty doing 70 in 40 degree weather, so I'm pretty excited. The gear I have now is decent but not very versatile as far as being cozy in a wide range of temps. The pant liners come out to make them almost full on mesh. The jacket has a thermal liner for cold days, and 4 vents in the front and in the back for warmer days. I got both in silver grey. They zip together so I should be able to do track days with them and they will be better for heat management.

But enough about me... how the hell is everyone else!?

Ok... who are you?  I'm sorry but I just don't remember you.  Maybe post some pictures of yourself in that Ducati swim suit and that will jog my memory.  oh wait...  busted. ;D

Welcome back, Shortie. We've missed you.  [beer]

Sounds like it should be a pretty good trip. That late in June you should be fine. The biggest problem you should be facing gear-wise is rain.

As far as the roads go, I can vouch for Rt. 3 from Augusta to Bucksport being pretty tame. Lots of hills and some good curves, but as long as you stay within 20 mph of the speed limit you'll be fine. Its a noob-friendly road, but its not boring.

If the weather is decent while you are heading through, I highly recommend hitting the Penobscot Narrows Bridge and Observatory in Bucksport. Its part of your route, and $5 gets you admission to the observatory and Fort Knox.

Maybe you'll even see a moose.

Looks like an awesome time! That is a really beautiful area!

I remember that article in Rider... I still can't believe the author failed to see a single moose the whole time [laugh]

Another great thing about this area - it's just a stone's throw from Mt. Desert Island!

I'm familiar with the route and the area. Tony and I have been doing an annual camping trip to MDI in the late summer for the past couple of years and we go over the Narrows bridge every time. We did the observatory last year and it was a gorgeous day, gorgeous view. We usually camp at Mount Desert Narrows and it's a great campground. We didn't want to camp for this trip though.

Last year when we camped we saw a crapload of deer. It was actually kind of scary because you couldn't drive more than a couple of miles without seeing them crossing the road or just hanging out waiting for some unsuspecting motorist. Didn't see any moose though.

And I'm not worried about the roads  ;)

When is DIMBY officially? I've completely missed the boat on the entire discussion thus far  :-\

Barring totally crappy weather I can't imagine why I wouldn't be going.

hey shortie...
if your taking a ride on the coast, and its in the right direction, check this out...

I love Morse Mountain. The bugs down in the marsh in the summertime are absolutely ridiculous (though not nearly as ridiculous as, say, Errol NH in May) but the view from the top and the beach are definitely worth it. I've always wanted to go park myself on the rock face with my easel and some oils but haven't gotten around to it yet.

I just noticed that pic was taken on my beau's birthday  ;D
