I know I started a thread somewhere on this, but it seems to have disappeared.

My friend's 1977 Toyota Celica.  He bought it new and it has about 60,000 miles on it.

We took it from a 2.0 five speed to a 2.6 (stroked 2.4) with a roots supercharger, disc brakes, full Aeromotive fuel system, 85 Celica GTS 5speed (lighter, and stronger), 79 Supra rear end with disc brakes and a Detroit True-Trac center, Weber DCOE carb, Aluminum radiator, full Autometer gage set in the stock locations (and some not so stock)

This should be a bad bad machine when it's rolling.  Target date is running by end of Feb.

We started by pulling the old 6.7" rear end.

I had to cut every bracket off the 79 Supra rear, except the spring perches, and reweld.  We were told it was bolt in, it was not.

It is now.

Tacked up and mocked up

Welded up

More to come. . .

Honestly, maybe it's just the pictures, but I'm not impressed with the quality of the powdercoat on the rearend and the brake rotors...

New motor goodness!  200 lb/ft on the engine dyno from 3k-the 5k redline.  That should make enough tire smoke to get Al Gore's attention [evil]

The calipers and rotors were done with a brush on epoxy, and I didn't do it.

The rear was powdercoated and I think it's good for what it cost.  Powder, to me, doesn't look as good as paint or anodize on aluminum.  I think there was a bunch of debris on it when I took the picture.

Thanks man!  I have to say, the throttle linkage and brackets I came up with-- I really like!  I think im most proud of that over all the other fab work ive done on the car.

For the trans, we ditched the original 4 (or was it 5) speed.  The 1-2 synchro was toast, and it had an iron housing which weighed a TON!

Enter the 85 Celica GT-S 5 speed with aluminum case.  Much lighter.  However, we discovered that the mount on the tail housing for the cross member was in a different place.  The company we're dealing with said they'd send out a different one that should put the holes in the right spot.

I just had to change it out.

Ok.

Did I mention the insides of reman 5 speeds are filthy?!?

And after all this, the housing they sent was the same as what we had.  I made special brackets to move the trans cross member aft about 1.5" and all is well.

It's not an exact science.

I liken welding to painting...you are controlling a liquid puddle in both cases.

Sometimes it's difficult to do.
