Rear brake light/running light on and off?

So I installed a new rear bulb. The running light is on but the front brake light doesn't activate when the lever is pulled but does when the rear light is actuated. Then, the daytime running light is out but the front and rear brakes both light! WTF. I'm switching to LED.
