Yes, I believe that (with the belts off) you just measure at the spot that gives you the best (largest) clearance on the opener. Make sure the piston is far enough away from TDC that you have room to open the valves if you're doig it this way, though. If you can't spin the cam easily by hand, it probably means the piston is in the way.
