B and I bought a '88 Mazda 323 GTX, I4-1.6l turbo 4wd.  A production version of a WRC rally car of yesteryor.

We looked at it/test drove it sunday.  Ran fine, needs some work.  No speedo or e-brake, this we knew.

Today we go back and pick it up.  B gets less than .5 mile down the road and the exhuast falls off at the engine end.  Apparently it was only being held up with a coat hanger.   [bang]

We get the exhaust back up off the ground and continue the 60+/- miles home.  It ran fine down the thruway.

B stops at home for some books before heading to teach,  he calls me a few minutes later and says the car won't go into gear.  AAA is on their way.  The clutch is new and have the recipe from the previous owner, so it must be the linkage or something.

Oh well, the joys of buying a 20 yo car.   [beer]

No offense taken.

I'm having serious second thoughts about it right now.

At least it is B's car/problem, not mine.   ;D

I think you may have a stretched or broken clutch cable.  Should be like $40 or so and about an hour to do.

The exhaust?!?  Depending on the condition of the steel around the brake, it could be re-welded together for cheap if you find someone who is willing to do that sort of work.

I remember those cars...  They can be very fun to drive!  [evil]

And besides, everytime there's an owner switch on that old of a car...  The car gets cantankerous and always throws a part or two...  ;)

We already had a shop lined up to do the exhaust.   [thumbsup]  Muffler go bye, bye.  Hello, catted straight pipe.   [evil]

Yeah, hopefully the clutch is that easy.

B had it towed to the dealer.   :-\   I know it is going $$$ for them to the work, but he wants "someone that knows the car" to work on it.  I bet some of their techs have never even seen this model.

we'll have to wait and see.   :P

Hello DD, Duck Stew and Jbubble
Why do roaches always die on their back?

That because the survivors flip them over to steal their sneakers and wallets.

DesmoDiva
