Tomorrow I go in at noon to have a tribute to my hero permanently etched upon my skin. This, to me, is no ordinary tattoo, nor is it a flimsy attempt to brand myself into something I consider "cool" and yet know nothing about.

Dr. Hunter S. Thompson was not only a great writer, he was also a fierce advocate for the little man. He sought justice in every sense of the word. His continual writing of the "Death of the American Dream" was a testament to the corruption of today's society, how no one is willing to work hard to become something great anymore. He was a crazy, irrational, ill-tempered, and an all out maniacal druggie until the end. But he was also kind, whole hearted, and generous. He was well aware of his flaws, and was a prime example of the type of person who can be so strong and yet, so weak. He never apologized for himself, always felt that if someone had a problem with the way he was, well, in the end it was their own problem. Many loved him, he will be sorely missed. I only wish I could have known him personally.

The Gonzo symbol was created by Hunter during his run for Sheriff of Pitkin county, Colorado. The double-thumbed fist (in my interpretation) symbolizes the stance against fear based authority. The peyote flower in the center symbolizes the stance against the illegalization of mind-altering drugs. The blade represents the sword that can be wielded against corruption. As a whole, it represents standing up for your rights, never backing down or giving up, and knowing what you know is right. This, I believe, is the heart of Gonzo.

This is for you, Hunter. May you rest in peace.

"Myths and legends die hard in America. We love them for the extra dimension they provide, the illusion of near-infinite possibility to erase the narrow confines of most men's reality. Weird heroes and mould-breaking champions exist as living proof to those who need it that the tyranny of the rat race is not yet final."
- Dr. Hunter S. Thompson

Right on Cierra! I can believe in that fist in the air and all of that Gonzo! I think that's a good choice and I hope it hurts... for your sake.  :)

Enjoy it!

I've read that article, I love it.  One of my favorites.

Also, it's too late, he's already buried.  [laugh] But we will make time for you guys. Let us know what works for you.

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the airâ€"these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.
