I had this happen twice right after I got it, and now a couple of times this spring. After a stretch of freeway driving, 70-80mph, it feels like the bike is missing or something. It is like a cyclical loss of power, normal power. I can maintain whatever speed I am going but increasing speed is not possible. If I continue to maintain the speed I am at the oil temp meter will jump up the last few bar to max. It does not start flashing.

Odd coincedence, it seems to only happen when it is warmer out (ie not in the mornings) and when I am riding directly into a headwind. Is something screwy happening with some of my airflow?

Any thoughts on stuff to check are appreciated.

Mike

----followup question-----

Do any of you get notified about service bulletins or do you periodically search for them? Apparently my 696 has 4 outstanding on it.

Sounds interesting.  Maybe an electrical problem?  Can you rev the engine when this happens?  Don't think it's a fueling problem since you say you can maintain speed.  Does the temp gradually come down from the high mark or jump down?  If it's jumping around, probably an electrical or sensor problem.  Surprised you are not seeing a warning light or message.  Suggest you take her in ASAP.  Assume she's still under warrantee...  Post up when you find out

Have you checked to see if yours is effected by the coil issue?

This was a good call, I found the service notice on nhtsa and it describes exactly what is happening. At slower speeds/rpms it is normal, at highway speeds - heats up/runs rough/loses power.

Dealer is checking to see if my vin is cover by that one. Guy was kind of a jerk when asked about it because I found the service bulletin on the Internet. Sorry for asking people/researching a problem before I call you to have you tell some BS answer. (Can you tell I am not hot on this dealer? Their customer service skills are downright bad.)

Any luck with the dealer?

If not there is a post here that list the Vin #s that are affected
