MRSA = Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus = nasty infections. Is that what you're referring to, Dolph?

Yes  , often happens when one crashes and wearing jeans or the like you get Road Rash and high likelihood of getting MRSA.

Very nasty stuff, sometimes requires amputation to save a person's life .

The Bacteria is such that it eats flesh so fast that Antibiotics sometimes can't stop it so amputation is needed.

Leather prevents your Hide from coming in contact with Asphalt and getting road rash so just a friendly warning ....wear COW HIDE ...LEATHER !  1.1-1.4 mm in thickness is best.      Dolph     :)

Besides, cleaning asphalt out of an open wound with a Brillo pad is no fun either!!!

sooooo..... in layman's non medical terms is that what the news is referring to as "staph infection" or "super staph infections" nowadays? that you can get basically anytime you break the skin.

i thikn there was a story in the news a couple years ago about a 17 year old high school kid getting what can be called a very minor abrasion from playing high school football outdoors on a grass field during a game and basically died a couple weeks later from a massive infection, antibiotics didnt' do anything.

very sad and like you guys mention you have to keep things in check and watch out for infection and have it treated immediately, no f_ing around with that stuff at all.

Yep. It's a bacterium, not a virus, and is much more common in a hospital setting, though it's getting more and more widespread. In most cases, antibiotics will cure it, but it's still nasty and can be very dangerous.

Fishermen, especially charter boat owners are being notified to use bleach when washing their boats down after each trip for this reason.
I started to get an infection in the shoulder after my accident 2 weeks ago. Luckily it responded to Amoxicillin. You can bet I kept a close eye on it tho.

Yes, it 's Staph and it has been showing up a lot in Football players who get abrasions . Also it is caught sometimes when a person has Joint Replacement Surgery . Hospital Staph is MRSA.

Anytime the skin is broken and Staph is present it can then invade your body at that site.

Due to the overuse of Antibiotics, Staph has become in many cases resistant to Drug Therapy and MRSA can become " Necrotic "  which means " flesh eating " and at a rate of an inch an hour if no drugs can abate it , then amputation is the only hope to keep it from consuming your entire body.    Dolph

YEESH! As if the road rash isn't bad enough!

I had a hand-size patch of roadrash on my hip a few years ago (bicycling accident), had to pick gravel and little black specks of dirt out, had to change the bandages several times a day (kept bleeding through) and each time was,  essentially, like ripping the scab off all over again. Took almost 3 weeks to heal. I don't recommend it.

The temptation to ride in a tanktop, shorts, flipflops and a "shorty" novelty helmet is strong but the memory of that roadrash is stronger.

I wouldn't tell anyone what to do but more gear is better than less and leather is the best.

i know exactly what you are talking about from cycling, that stuff sucks, even if you do everything right, ie keeping the rash wet and sealed up with something like tegaderm dressing so that you dont' have to change it at much, it still hurts like heck at ngiht and will for the first week especially when its still discharging a lot of plasma from the site.  that stuff sucks and how water hitting it hurts liek hell.

I wonder how bad this sort of contagion will get before the gov't bans the practice of feeding food lot animals antibiotics. Scary stuff!

Cleveland Browns fans got to hear a lot about this staph. Kellen Winslow got two infections this season.

The problem is probably more due to overprescription of antibiotics to people as it is to animals. Unfortunately, patients demand antibiotics for EVERYTHING, and since the patient is the "customer" these days, they get what they want.
