Twilight Bike Rides

Open track twilight cycling nights:  July 22, Aug. 19, Sept. 16, and Oct. 14.  The cost is $10 per rider to participate.

From a cyclist perspective the smooth pavement and constant elevation changes of the track create a perfect environment to train and race on.  There is a demanding climb up the "Rahal Straight" portion of the track which makes the legs burn and tests even the most fit cyclist.  The famed "Corkscrew" section of the track is quite a thrill to descend on a bicycle and a must do for anyone who rides a bike and enjoys the sensation of gravity when cycling.  My favorite part is "Rainey Curve" named after one of my idols and possibly the best ever Moto racer of all time, county resident Wayne Rainey.  This section of the track when taken on a bicycle is tremendously fast and provides the rider with a euphoric feeling of speed and freedom on two wheels.

The twilight cycling series is the brainchild of SCRAMP and the Monterey County Parks Dept., as a program to bring the community together partaking in the fun and healthy recreation sport of cycling.  The racetrack will be open once a month through October for cycling with each month having a special program on tap.  This first open track session will feature a practice race using the brand new Sea Otter Classic Criterium course.  The track will be open for riding at 5: 30 p.m. The practice race which is open to all riders will start at 6:30 p.m. and will use portions of the track including turn 1, turn 11, the finishing straight, and the pit row area.  Cost to cycle for the twilight sessions is 10$, with a portion of this fee going to local charities.

I'd love to go, but that's a long drive and an expensive motel room.  What a great opportunity to learn the track though!   [thumbsup]

Carpool from the city. I can take 4 bikes and 4 riders in my car.

About 1.5 hours SF to Track.

I thought I'd drive back after. Not thinking about a hotel, but... Ideas?

OK. This makes it a lot more feasible, so all I've got to do is figure out how to take that day off...not likely.  Paula - you gotta go with Eric.  Do eeeeet!!!!

As much as I'd like to test out the pristine pavement on my new Sirrus, I don't think I'd make it through one lap.

I've ridden this track several times on different bicycles, including down the sloping hills next to it. [evil] I highly recommend the experience.  [thumbsup]

I can carry 4 bikes and passengers as well. And as soon as I get the mounts for the BMW, that'll be another 2.

Do I foresee a MOB Laguna cycling night in the future?

2 1/4 miles.   300 feet of climbing.
We're not talking Alpe d'Huez  [cheeky]
Uphill is a steady gradual climb, down is a very wide set of Chicanes with plently of room to ride your brakes down.
Back to turn 1 a little bump of a climb I'm guessing less than 100 feet.  Should be really easy. A beginner in moderate shape should be able to do it at their own pace. NOT a race.

I think we should start getting organized to do this. How many times will you ever get to ride on Laguna for under $300?

I've got room for bikes and gear, so let me know if you're interested.
