Wouldn't actually using that product make you an instant criminal, unless you filled out some paperwork and sent the gents in DC some money? :P

And for ~$350, you could just buy a carbine, and have two guns instead of one that's "some assembly required."

It didn't seem nearly as dumb till I gave it a moment's thought.

no.

as long as you put a butt AND a long barrel on at the same time, then you're not doing anything illegal.  put a butt on and no barrel, then it's an SBR.  if you put a barrel on and no butt, then it might not meet minimum length.
