with a little effort this could have been a log splitter or cement mixer. what a waste [puke]

It was made from a wrecked bike....it's sort of the opposite of "waste".

Why would the engine have been detuned?

It's a result of the different carbs and exhaust, it wasn't intentionally detuned.
Like I said, it's got plenty of power.

That and a bike set up like that probably doesn't turn or brake as well as the original. Having it get up to speed just as quick;y is not a good plan.

ex-Stuart's Bobber wasn't build for canyon strafing -- it was about riding something that is cool and different and is powered by a Ducati.  (Plus he used it as a commuter bike for months unlike most garage parked Ducati's that only see the roads on an occasional Sunday)

Rolling out of MotoGP this year with Stuart on his 'Bobber and my on my DesmoDevil -- you should have seen heads spin about.  Heck, I even had two different people that I never met who sent me pictures of us rolling out of the access roads and from the highway while they were riding alongside us.  How often do you have that happen with your "normal" Ducati?  (Ducati powered bikes like these aren't for shy people!)

Wait...what? What are you talking about?

I wasn't criticizing the bobber-I was explaining why one might prefer a slightly detuned engine in it.

I was under the impression that the pre-FI 900's only put out around 60hp. I went to snoop around... but I'm really tired. :)

IIRC, my 1999 had something like 72 stock.  It was dyno'd with its current configuration and came in at 75 hp.

Odd. I'm almost never right.

Is there any chance you could post those pics? I'd love to see 'em.

The engine is a 1998 'W' headed 904cc.  'W' heads have 750 cams and valves in them.  750 cams and valves are small for a 750....not to mention a 904.

Chris Kelley has an article on his site about the 'W' headed 900's on one of his sites if someone wants to look it up.

It's got 60-ish HP...but weighs in below 350lb's so acceleration on that bike isn't a problem.  On hard shifts from 1st to 2nd, it would either lift the front wheel, or spin up the rear.  I would routinely be exceeding the speed limit by large quantities at the end of freeway entrance ramps so it moved out.  Quite well.

I put 34mm Mikuni carbs on it because they were the largest carbs you could get in the smallest carb bodies and the carbs BARELY fit into the frame as it was (had to trim a boss off of the one float bowl).  The 900's came with like either 38 or 40mm stock carbs so the smaller ones put more emphasis on the low-end torque (which complimented the crappy cams and valves).

He bought it from me for larger sum than he's currently listing it at.

So buy it, the price is cheap.

The price IS cheap, but I also have to factor in shipping to HI and garage space.  :(

Nono, you have to factor in moving to socal and not needing a garage.
