I haven't touched the grass for over 20 years, on Mardi, or any other day. [laugh]

My NOLA wife, the Cajun Princess, would love to go but we can't. Maybe at Spring Break with junior.

Mardi Gras can be simulated in your home state.

Step one: Locate a large herd of cattle
Step two: Have a friend start a stampede
Step three: Stand in front of the stampede and flash your tits
Step four: Be trampled to death by the charging cattle

All of the death and dismemberment with none of the travel headaches.

Damn what have I done?  Should I miss it or go......

You forgot Step five: Be beaten senseless and then Tazed by NOLA PD for no good reason, other than they hate Mardi Gras.

:o   I've never been to Mardi Gras (or New Orleans...  [bang] ) but I always thought the place sounded kind of fun... until now that is!

Is police violence recent or is it just the way it goes during Mardi Gras?

It has always been bad.  It is not too bad on most weekend nights, but I will never attempt/attend mardi gras again.  The cops are in a foul mood, and the people are evil.  A good friend of mine tried to pick up some doubloons off the ground and had her hand broken by an asshole who stomped on her to get them.  We saw a lot of that.  The police were using lots of OC, and I was collateral damage.  The guy had only bumped into the cops horse, and he sprayed the shit out of him.  Yes, the dude was drunk.  Who isn't in the Quarter?

We go to the Quarter every year or two, but mostly during the day.  I was in NO a year ago for family xmas but didn't go.  Mardi Gras can be experienced in other cities, it just loses some of the Caligula style atmosphere.  There are parades everywhere.  Even Bogalusa has one.  The parade in Picyune is lame, but is led my a transvestite.  Quite the spectacle in southern Mississippi.

If you haven't been to the quarter, go during the fall.  Great weather, less crowds, and you can actually have a good time.

Skip the hurricanes and opt for the 190 proof tequila slushie or the hand grenades for a unique drunken experience.

I also recommend a trip across the Huey P. Long bridge while a train is traveling towards you.  It will not be forgotten.

No. It's unfortunate that police trouble has been a way of life down there for a long time. Long before Katrina there were NOLA cops busted for armed robbery and more. Like I said, Jen and her brother went to Loyola for colloge and even then they had many bad cop stories. It doesn't take but one or two bad cops to ruin a city's reputation. I'd like to think that 99% are good folks! [thumbsup] I guess we will see with all the national attention on NOLA due to the Saints win! Happy Mardis Gras folks!!! [clap]

unless you're 20 and like being pushed, prodded and groped by obnoxiously drunk people DON'T go to Gras.  NO has some great things but overall I've NEVER liked the place.  Too many drunks and unless you plan on drinking like an idiot it's doubtful you'll find anything of value down there for the exceptions being made like a stroll down St. Charles, French Quarter and then GET THE HELL OUT!  Granted much time was spent while in college but I still go down to see family (reluctantly) and friends from time to time..............and going down there on business next week  [bang]

Cops there have some reason to be aggressive as just a few blocks down the road is the 9th ward where they don't even venture into in most cases.  As you pass the police station, if you're drunk and lost, they will turn you around and often times tell you they will not come get you if something happens should you lose your orientation again.
