Are they worth it?

I know Duc parts are expensive, I could live with a few scratches.

Looking to getting back on a Monster the cheapest way possible without having to resort to getting a 600 series. Could/would live with a 900 (carbed or ie) would rather a 2000/2001 injected 900.

Just thinking out loud.  :P

mattyvas

Nothing wrong with them and I can say that from experience.
Not fixing them but owning.
I'd say you'll find a 900 carb for a pretty decent price.
What sorta budget do you got?

techno

I think it depends on how much damage it has. A mate of mine is currently doing an 848. In the past he has purchased and fixed up an ST4, speed triple and a few Kawasakis. He apparently has made money on each. I think the trick is searching worldwide for parts with the benefit of a strong Aus $$.

I think a monster would turn out OK as there are many standard parts on here for cheap. Its the bling that can be expensive!

It's luck of the draw on auction pricing.

The day i went, people were bidding stupid money on smashed bikes ie $7k on GSXR600's (that still require $800 rego + repairs) that you could buy unsmashed for around $9k.

My mate saw a badly smashed 1098 go for $26k. He got a bargain on a BMW but the bargains seem to be very rare. The scooters were great value. Cosmetic damage going for around $300.

You might need to go a few times to find something well priced. I dare say a cosmetic damaged ducati will still fetch a premium and you might only save a few hundred vs buying a non-crashed model. Plus you won't know whats wrong with it at auction, it's just assumed damage. Pretty risky for a Duc given the price of parts. I didn't end up buying one after my visit to the auction as i couldn't see the point in saving $500 but potentially risking so much.

mattyvas

I guess as you say buying at auction is always up and down.
Sometimes as you said people are paying silly money for bikes but that sort of money
you'd find people are buying track bikes and don't intend them for road use, so if they pay 6k or 8k
it's a bargin to them, instead of buying a roadie that someone is trying to sell.

Mr T.I.B good to hear from you man!

Some word of experience:

1. Buy at the right price. check out the cost of replacement parts before you bid on something.
2. Always anticipate repairing more than what you see is initially wrong with the bike because there will always be something extra to spend on especially if you can't start the bike.
3. When the bike is on the written off register you will need to take the bike over the pits at the RTA. There is a fee for the inspection of around $400 just to clear the write off status. When you go over the pits you must show what you have spent on the repairs. They even go to the extent of calling the places that supplied you parts just to confirm you have not provided bogus receipts. I completed a stat dec stating I completed the repairs myself and supplied all receipts. Just remember the RTA is looking for scamers re birthing cars & bikes.
4. On top of the $400 you need to get a blue slip plus pay for rego.
5. Lastly, if you go to sell the bike just remember the written off status will be noted on REVS which may devalue the bike.

Mr T.I.B good to hear from you man!

[thumbsup]

Yeah. I got the shits one day last December, & took myself off. Not riding and being on this site doesn't mix.

Hardly seems worth going the auction route, in the coming months I'll see what the budget can handle and maybe go the 800/900 route.  :D

Not pigmy's bike?  ???

Not sure about my budget yet. It would be in the $8k-$9k range, I would say. Lower than that, even better. :D

[thumbsup] It would be great to be back. Knowing that this bike would be more a toy than my main form of transport will make me appreciate it more.

I did see a nice looking 98 900s on ebay. But I'm not exactly in the market at the moment.

Sorry might be mistaken, thought that last time I saw it there was a James Bond like smoke screen trailing.

Yours doesn't smoke Mmick, it's performance vapour from the speed you carry in corners.
