I love crackling

but could it be doing damage to my heart?

6000kms on the 696 now, always been fitted with full termi system. The infamous crackle that the bike has always had, that I love, to me seems to be happeing more often and louder, more so when engine braking,

U Recon its tune time (though they say 12K for servicing), or am I just imagining it. Could I be doing any damage? I also feel im getting a lot less kms to the tank. About 230kms. Or maybe Im just pushing it harder as she gets older. Im not mechanically minded so I thought I'd bug you lot who seem to know a bit (or at least fooled me into thinking you do).

this crackle is mostly when you are off throttle?  when does it happen?  It could be air is getting through somewhere before the termis.  try tightening the clamps on the pipe, or re tightening the exhaust flanges at the head.

cheers

Yep off throttle or the last 5mm of rotation before off. Happens between 3rd > 2nd > 1st gears (lounder as I go lower). Ill get the shifters/drivers out and have a tighten.

Cheers

696's with Termis are well noisy. There is always a dirty crackle and popping on roll-off, especially around 4K RPM. If you put the exhaust baffles in, it will go away, but perf will drop.

I think are correct in that you are probably just wringing it a little harder and perhaps noticing it more. The only thing you will damage is your ears (and the ears of those within about 30 metres)

Getting 230Kms out a tank - without the fuel light coming on - is pretty good mileage (kilometerage? :-\). The fuel light normally pops on on ours around 200-220Kms with a relatively spirited, significantly lighter rider than me on it.

Cheers for the piece of mind. BTW. 230km is empty tank. 180km is light on. Baffles are never going back in. Yep im a social menace.

man I thought my bike was bad! Fuel light comes on at 180 as well - but this is an S2R 1000 with full termi system - mine doesn't crackle but it is a hell of a loud noise - loud pipes save lives!  [moto]

anyhow doesn't hurt to check if everything is tight - I always check that loose nut on the bars!!  [cheeky]

yep I'd say Craigo is pretty much right, the older she gets the more you get used to it the harder you ride it.
All this would = less k's from a tank, I wouldn't imagine you are that far out of tune not on such a new bike.

Hey there, I have a 696 with termis too!  yep she is loud - just a bit curious I seem to get 260/280 out of the tank before the fuel light comes on - I always run premium in the tank and do not ride hard.  I have manged to get around the crackling a bit I let the clutch out a bit slower when going down the gears (have been clutchless shift up).  Oh my rearset is on its way so yay not long now until the big silver things are gone [moto] I have also clocked over 20 000ks now and except the kick stand all has been good.

Hey Roxy.

300kms to the tank!!!!! AWESOME!!!!!!

My low kms are also probably down to alot of commuting and riding in sydney traffic. Im also probably a tad heavier than you (safe bet) so the poor monster works hard with my fat ass putting downward pressure on it. I also run top grade fuel. I do think it is down to riding a little aggressively, once again I can thank Sydney traffic for that. I also like to get it out to the open roads alot and push it (safely of course). The loud pipes and crackle do help me vent frustration verbally machine to machine (bike to cager) so I can probably thank Sydney traffic for that too. I love the crackle and throatiness of the termis, I was more curious is its not doing damage to the bike, especially sicne the pies, ecu, airfilter etc are not standard, which appears from the feedback all should be ok.

I suppose If I wanted a quiet bike I would of, god forbid, can i say it, this is gonna hurt, put the baffles back in. There I said it. Noooooooooooooooooo.

20,000 kms, nice 1.

What happened with your stand? Electronics bug out?

Hey back Justo,

I do like the 300k part but do not go over the 260/280 - the other thing is that as i ride on a dirt road i run the normal air filter.  Not sure if that makes much of a difference and i ride in town very rarely.  That baffle option is scary but i must confess I have thought about it (OMG it feels dirty to write that even). With the kickstand it came loose and the first time the bigger of the two bolts had also come loose so we used locktite, not until after the sensor broke at least i was at home, the second time i was quite a way from home, this time i parked then went to pull off and the sensor was broken so i went no where until the truck came and took me home.  I know have a nut on the bolt as well as more locktite and will be getting it checked once i head back up to launceston (I am at the other end of the state to the ducati dealer).  Hubby has glued one of the sensors in place on one of the broken ones so now i can get myself going if it should happen again!!!!

happy rides
Nic
