Does it beep at all while opening?

All the safe I've messed with, the beeps can be turned off.

Having no kiddos around makes a huge difference. We have a very good, safe, smart 15 year old. He knows if he does something stupid with a gun either at home, farm or the range his gun days will be toast. I'm his step Dad and both me and his Dad are on the same page and will put up with zero nonsense.

Problem is my wife takes care of several little ones here at our house. One year old (nephew), 14 month old and four year old (kiddos of good friends)... so our gun rules have changed considerably. As they should under those circumstances.

In my world I'd have a loaded gun in every room. Maybe two or three in the bedroom, kitchen and garage! [laugh] But I have been restricted to one pistol and shotgun. Both with empty chambers and the pistol has the magazine in a different spot. The shotgun is totally inaccessible to the kids. They would have to be adult height and also know where it is to reach it. Same for the pistol and magazine. And yes, I have practiced getting to both in the dark and with my eyes closed a hundred times. It's as good as I can make it without "cheating" and hiding other loaded guns. I've made the promise to my wife so I won't do that. :P

We've got a great dog who seems to be alert and on guard 24/7. She's the best alarm system I have ever had. Guns are nice and all but having a good dog that's protective of "the pack" and turf is worth it's weight in gold. All the companion stuff is a given. My dog is not a biter and is not mean at all, she is just very protective and has a great bark. That's a win-win. She scares the shit out of the UPS drivers and the USPS letter carriers. That just confirms to me that she's doing a good job. [thumbsup] [popcorn] If you came to our door with no good intentions I am sure she would make you think twice and you would go hit my neighbor's home instead. ;) Of course they have a 150 lb Great Dane! [laugh]
I plan to list the Federal Gov't. as a dependent on my next 1040 tax filing!

I have flying honey badgers and I'm not afraid to use them!

1911's are pretty easy to work on and since they have been around for a century, there is no end of good information on doing it.  One real good basic book on the topic is "Hallock's .45 Auto Handbook".  Its all pretty straightforward and easy to understand and it takes you through all the basic things you can do and some of the more complex ones also.

I actually met Ken Hallock when he was doing a gunshow up here while doing some geneological (sp) research while in the area, so I got an autographed copy.  Its pretty dogeared and fingerprinted up now but I have used the book a lot, especially when I was learning how to make 1911's run.

As the Hallock's 1911 book is out of print, are there any others you can recommend?

Walt Kuleck's 1911 book should be in print.  He's very thorough, sort of the chief scientist at Fulton Armory (if he's still there)

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the airâ€"these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

We have been working really hard on long gun mag changes for several years now. They will make a believer out you once you start getting smooth with them.

Just watched some videos on youtube of bad range behavior.  Reminds me why I don't go to ranges often, especially public ones.
