This time next Saturday morning I'll be set up on a corn feeder at my friend's ranch in west TX waiting for a big feral hog to wander into range. [thumbsup] It's time for my annual best holiday of the year... opening of dove season. My friends and I have been doing opening day together for 25+ years. Wouldn't miss it.

We always go a few days early to do some ranch work, shoot guns, hog hunt, eat like kings, smoke good cigars, hang out, laugh and not be in a big city or around irritating people. Priceless, adds years to my life.

My friend has game cameras set up on his feeders that send you a text telling you they have gone off. There is a related website that you can access that will show you all the recent pics. We all have his password and have been drooling over the hogs that show up at dark, 1:00AM and again right at sunrise. They range from 50-75 lbs (Mmmm... good eatin'!! [drool]) to some that are 300+ lbs. Even showed some bucks with really nice 10+ point racks in other pictures for the deer hunters later in the year. No deer for me. Just hogs and dove.

Got my 16" heavy barrel AR with a 3x9 Leupold AR scope all doped in and ready to go. Also taking my new Ruger Gunsite Scout rifle with a Leupold 1.5x5 Firedot scout scope. It needs some more mileage and hopefully I will get it up on one of the bigger pigs.

This next week can't pass fast enough. [popcorn] [bacon] [beer] I can smell the dove cooking over mesquite wood as I type!
I plan to list the Federal Gov't. as a dependent on my next 1040 tax filing!

I have flying honey badgers and I'm not afraid to use them!

Just less than a year ago, I ordered a bunch of milsurp 5.45 AK74 ammo from Sportsmans Guide.  This was right as the SHTF with regard to ammo.

They are not my favorite place for ammo, but I used a free shipping coupon, which was necessary for the 8 spam cans.

Well, they sent me 2, and backordered the rest.  Then 3 months later, another 2 came.

I just got an email saying the remaining 4 just shipped.

I was shocked that SG came thru given the huge price jump in ammo.  The cost for these 1000 round cans is easily 200% more than I paid.

I think I am stocked up for a little while. Now, if I had only bought some 9mm too.. sheesh.

I've still got about 4K rds of 9mm, and about 1200 or so of 5.56.  The rifle ammo is starting to come back a bit; just saw 1K cases of XM193 for a little over $400, but I think I'll wait a little longer before buying.

why didn't ya?

Left my "ID" at work and didn't feel like paying the additional $150 over the blue label price.

There was some TulAmmo 5.56 in the 1000rd pack going for $330 shipped, but I am sure that's all gone.  I got two cans, but I have plenty of LC in storage.

Local gun shop has 5.56 for $.55/rnd.  Deal or no?

Mainly I'm just curious as I don't have anything to fire it but 55 gallon drums of ammo are cool :)

its a deal if that's all you can find, but do the math == $550 per 1000.  I just got two cases of TulAmmo 5.56 for $330 each

Isn't the Russian stuff steel case ammo? Hopefully not corrosive primed. I've stayed away from Ruskie ammo since I had a bad experience years ago with Wolf .223 hollow point. Took a tactical class where the range would not allow ball ammo, only HP. The LEO instructor got a killer deal (back in the good old days) on the Wolf HP ammo for the students to buy.

Myself and another student had hell with the Wolf ammo. I took three ARs and none of them would feed consistantly. No extraction issues just feed problems. And yes, I used good mags. I keep them numbered on the base plates. In case one goes south I can ID it and keep it out of the rotation.

Bummer of a class but I did get real good immediate action/mag change drills! [laugh]

Wolf and TulAmmo are commercial loads -- no corrosive primers.  Steel cased, and "polymer" coated.

I've only had problems with the old lacquer coated Wolf ammo in my Valmet.  As far as I can tell, the Valmet's chamber is very tight and the lacquer gets just a tiny bit soft when heated and would cause the case to stick and fail to extract.

I've had no problems with the recent stuff that is polymer coated.  Feed or extract.  I've used it in both AR and the Valmet 76, zero issues.

If you're having FTF issues, I would measure the cartridge, but its possible your ramp just didn't like HP ammo.

I've had little problem with ammo over the years, except for one batch of Santa Barbara 9mm.  It kaboomed a Tec-9 that I had (yeah yeah it's a fun plinker) and smells like dead cat and carb cleaner mixed.  Lots of feed problems, it has a weird projectile.

The issue with the Wolf .223 HP was a long time ago. I should probably get over it and try the new Tula loads. Price damn sure is good but I'm stocked with .223 right now.

I assumed it was the ramp vs Wolf HP bullets. Other people had zero problems. Just me and one other student. All three of my ARs were different makers so the ammo just didn't like me and my guns. [laugh]

Absolutely! That's the only way we cook 'em. [thumbsup] [drool]

PS ordered another stand & steel plate from your buddies at Arntzen. I leave a couple at my friend's ranch in west TX and a few at my place in east TX. Never without Arntzen steel plates where ever I go! [laugh]
