I took my 1911 to the range Thanksgiving day and had a lot of fun :)

I only went through about 100 rounds but managed a couple targets with 2" groups (at 7yds) and that's the best i've done with this gun, so I was happy.

Got some hammer bite too.  Not bad, but after probably 500-600 rounds through this gun this is the first time I've experienced it.

Anyway, I came to realize that gun does not fit well in my hand.  I have big hand and can easily put the first joint of my index finger past the trigger.

I thought to myself that maybe I needed to check out something with a double stack magazine.  This would also be an excuse to purchase another firearm :D

My wife and I stopped at the gun shop to fondle pistols yesterday.

Im wanting her to find something she's comfortable handling.

She ended up liking a S&W M&P compact 9mm the best -

Im really digging the Ruger SR9c compact 9mm.  Great fit in my hand and it comes with a longer mag that allows a lot more grip as well as a shorter mag that's geared for carry.

Does anyone have any experience with either of these?  Im guessing they're quality brands as they're both major players in the firearms market but I've never owned anything from either of them.

Thoughts?

I've handled and fired the new M&P and like it.  They did their homework.

Haven't handled the Ruger but have heard good things.

But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

Zero mileage on either but I am sure they are both good. S&W and Ruger make some good quality stuff. All my Smith guns have worked great but they are all wheel guns and the only Rugers I have are .22s and my step son's Model 77 .223. My guess is you'd have to work hard to find someone who says they both make shitty guns. [bang]

Is your 1911 "stock"? As in no beavertail grip safety. I assume it is if you got bit. Stock 1911s, Hi-Powers and Walther ppk/ppks pistols are famous for the "bite". The 1911 is the easiest to cure with a beavertail grip safety. Saves the web of your hand and lets you grip higher for more control.
I plan to list the Federal Gov't. as a dependent on my next 1040 tax filing!

I have flying honey badgers and I'm not afraid to use them!

The fact that flame throwers exist is proof that someone somewhere said "I'd sure like to set those people over there on fire but I'm just not close enough to get the job done."

CONFIDENCE: the feeling you have right before you understand the situation.

Monsterlover

Yeah it's stock.  I thought it strange after all those rounds that it starts biting me now [laugh]

I don't think my grip can get much higher.

I fondled the Ruger before buying the Sig 250.  Felt similar in heft and quality to the Sig.  The thing that turned me off is the "Glock-like" trigger "safety".

See if you can get some range time on a DAO pistol.  They take a lot of getting used to after shooting the Sig 228 and Glock 17.  Probably would not have bought it had I tried it first.

Can you elaborate?  You didn't buy the ruger and did buy the sig but had you tried the sig first you wouldn't have?

I just read up on DAO and im not sure the ruger fits that description.

Wikipedia says the trigger pull cocks and releases the firing pin each time.

The ruger is cocked when the slide is racked. You cab see the pin at the back of the slide.

Im not an expert though so im not certain on my description...

The Ruger has a similar action to the Kahr.  Slide partial cocks the pin, trigger does the rest.

The slide partially cocks the pin and the trigger finishes cocking the pin?  Or the slide does it all and the trigger just releases it?

Trigger finishes a full cock and then releases

Gotcha.

What's bad about that?

It's been several months since I purchased the 250.  I checked out the Ruger briefly before plunging down the $$ on the Sig.

I recall the trigger pull feeling hideous, assumed it was a dao but now realize its a striker system.  Did a little research afterward and found that the mag has to be in the pistol in order to feel the actual travel/pull.

The Sig is at least consistent in its mile long travel.  Need to practice a lot more with it......or sell it and be happy with my 228.
