Spent the day helping a friend out at our one local automotive machine shop, harvesting Suzuki Samurai cranks to send down to Phoenix to regrind. You can barely see it in the picture, but when every one of the crank journal screws broke loose (staggeringly difficult for a part that's only torqued to around 50 foot pounds), about an eighth of a teaspoon of water wept out of the bolt hole.

My buddy says he's never seen another motor do that, but every one of the 50+ Suzukis he's pulled apart has, unless it had been previously rebuilt.

Weird - any ideas why? We were playing with the idea that this was some sort of thread locker - that because water isn't compressible, having it under pressure like that was some kind of a thread locker.

All the thread locker I've ever seen has been thicker than water by far.

Condensation collecting somehow?  Sounds like it has something to do with the engines design.

Another day at my buddy's auto machine shop. Today's fun included:

A Jaguar head that was too big to fit in their little soda blaster, so I got to clean it by hand.

Pulling apart a 1969 Corvette motor (Bill saw me hitting one of the four bolt main bearing caps with a smallish ball peen hammer, handed me a MUCH bigger one and said "You're too make the beast with two backsing gentle. It's a damn smallblock Chevy. Hit it for chrissakes." In my own defense, I will note that most of my experience with rebuilding motors comes from motorcycles.)

And then a few hours of playing musical engine blocks, trying to organize things a bit.

I'd seen this in the corner before today, but finally snapped a couple of pictures. I know what it is... Do you?   ;D

This is a good post and some good pictures and I'm sorry for injecting any negativity, but the big hammer episode above is a perfect example of why I do my own work.

It's all in the grind, Sizemore. Can't be too fine, can't be too coarse. This, my friend, is a science. I mean you're looking at the guy that believed all the commercials. You know, about the "be all you can be." I made coffee through Desert Storm. I made coffee through Panama while everyone else got to fight, got to be a Ranger.

Today's "School's Out for Summer (Job)" picture -- tearing down a set of early 1970s 911 heads. Yes, there are two more in the box on the floor. Got three of them washed & blasted before I had to run to my other summer job and so far, no cracks.  [thumbsup]
