The competitors I admire most in endurance events aren't always the winners, though those certainly deserve praise. It's the ones who truly endure that get my attention.

Beautiful photos! They make the fisherman in me wonder what they're trawling for there at what looks to be within reach of a surf casting rod...

As I'm spending the summer off from teaching, i've been doing a couple of fun jobs (working in an auto machine shop and in a golf cart shop) that occasionally intersect. Ever wonder why gas golf carts start so easily every time you step on the gas? instead of advanced timing, the spark is substantially retarded. Of course, there's a price for that - they're pretty gutless, even for low-displacement motors. And because combustion is so poor, you get exhaust ports that look like this:



That port is probably 80% full (by volume) of rock-hard carbon build up - the valve guide is "extended" by nearly 3/4 of an inch of the stuff. I had to get it out with a hammer and small chisel, and wound up with three or four tablespoons of carbon on the bench from just two, itty-bitty cylinders. Unfortunately, I forgot to take a picture of the cleaned up head before I dressed the seats & put new valves in.

Another fun fact I learned: on really old, two-stroke carts, reverse gear is achieved by simply running the motor backwards. And because the timing is then substantially advanced instead of retarded, those suckers GO when you run backwards!

The trawlers that close are picking up mostly shrimp, along with some flounder and snapper. I was at the beach for a week, and we ate a pound of fresh shrimp a day, along with whatever fish they brought in.
