Thanks!  I love that tree.

That front yard used to be all grass and then our sewer line broke so it was all dig up. We worried about that tree since they were right on it with the excavator.

As you can see, it hung in there.

Some photos from the latest adventure... V and I are making good on her long-time dream of building a small, self-sufficient straw bale house on a piece of property she owns just south of the Grand Canyon. Last weekend, we poured half of the footings, and are heading back up to pour the rest on Sunday:

Those are the water tanks we hauled across the state a few months back, buried to about 6' - plenty to keep things from freezing, and, not coincidentally, the depth where you hit solid rock all over the property.

The week before, I was teaching what my high school calls an "Intensive" - two solid weeks of a single elective course, usually with a significant fieldwork component. Mine this time around was called "Going Up The Country - Building and Living Off The Grid." We spent a week with 14 high school kids up at the property (with about two days of actual work time), with this to show for our effort: an outdoor, summer kitchen with a post & beam roof and a straw bale & earthen plaster half wall built on a foundation of old tires & rammed earth:

It still needs a couple more of coats of plaster and a lime wash for water resistance, but I like the way it's looking. And here it is before plaster, looking up from near the house site:

That roof isn't gonna handle the snow load. :P

I wonder if that guy had enough time to think about how awesome Nomex is.

Now that you mention it...

While this place is in a serious precipitation shadow (getting more than a couple of inches of snow would be highly unusual, even when places 50 miles south are getting a foot or more), I didn't give that as much thought as I could have. Fortunately, I've got the whole summer and Fall to fix it.
