So this was posted in CAM originally by Stille, since the fellow in it look's a lot like one of the locals here - so cridit goes to S for the find.  But I figured other folks might want to see it amusing PSA

I'd like to see anything in this area.  I think this is a good start, since it uses a bit of humor to get it's point across.  There's that one scare tactic one from the UK where they have a collision between a bike and car that pulls out infront of the biker, shot from the drivers POV.  makes a strong point, but heavy on the shock factor.

Just seeing more of any sort of awareness messages is probably a good thing.  In my area I'm noticing more and more scooters as gas goes up and parking goes down.  A little more education for both drivers, scoot pilots and  many motorcyclists would be good...

But now I'm opening up that driver education, tiered license discussion... shame on me

We see that ad occasionally here on local TV (I live in St Paul, MN), but it doesn't get played often.  I suspect that there just isn't a ton of $$ in the motorcycling-safety ad budget around here... [laugh]

Regardless, it is a pretty cool ad, and I bet that it was created with some funding from Victory Motorcycles and maybe Aerostich, too.  (I think that the bike is a Victory, and the rider is wearing an Aerostich Roadcrafter suit - both are MN companies.)

The good news is that it doesn't take a big ad budget to get a Public Service Announcement (PSA) on the air -- over-the-air broadcast stations (and radio stations, for that matter) are required by law to devote a certain amount of their airtime to "public good" programing, which they usually fill with commercial spots produced by non-profits. The "Brain on Drugs" spot and others you see from the Ad Council, for example, aren't paid ads -- the station is airing them for free. Granted, you don't get any guarantee that your PSA will ever air, or any say in when it's on if you're one of the lucky ones. Stations show a LOT more PSA content in the wee hours of the morning, where they're not forgoing much in the way of ad revenue.

This is an excellent PSA -- snappy, funny, not controversial, great production values, promoting the public good. PSA managers in Minnesota probably like this one, since a lot of the stuff they get is pretty ponderous and preachy, and looks like it was shot on a 15-year old VHS recorder. And goes straight in the round file.

Since this one's only identified by the Minnesota Motorcyclists tag at the end, you might not even have to produce your own spot to get it aired in your area. If anyone has contacts with Minnesota Moto & can find out who produced this, it might be just a matter of getting the spot re-cut with a different text at the end linking to an appropriate group in your area -- or who knows, maybe the MSF could get a group of manufacturers to foot the bill for a nationwide PSA distribution, and even production of a totally new spot.

I just sent this to my DOT:

Quote from: ME!
As a motorcyclist in AZ, and having been in a severe collision at the hands of an inattentive driver, I am inquiring if you have, or plan to start a "Watch For Motorcyclists" campaign. Here is one that I have seen from the Minnesota State Government.

This type of PSA gets the point across without being too serious.

Please consider some type of PSA, the thousands of motorcylists in the state will thank you.
