I think that the most obvious example of the shift in chronology comes from having Sung Kang (who play Han in Tokyo Drift) as part of the lead cast for the current film. I think it's somewhat obvious that Drift is the ugly step child in the movies. If they continue beyond Fast Five, it'll really look bad (in an odd man out sort of way).

the animation all sucked (especially compared to the japanese stuff we were getting).

I am the same way. All the girls from gi joe were hot, and the one chick from m.a.s.k oh and the sister in silver hawks. But all the girls in japanese cartoons like sailor moon looked deformed to me with the big eyes and long arms n legs.
