probably more about resources and funding
ducati might have stretched themselves thin and the Diavel is a big money risk

About every 5 years this rumor pops up..  VW, Piaggio, Guzzi, etc..

Nooo.

If AMG/Mercedes buys Ducati then the bikes will be more expensive than their Japanese counterparts and the maintenance costs will be really high.

uh... wait a second...
I own several motorcycles. I have owned lots of motorcycles. And have bolted and/or modified lots of crap to said motorcycles...

I rode an AMF-Harley for ten years (well... rode it for 3, fixed it for 7) and this is one consonant too close for comfort to me.
