To Mother:

I don't. Sure, when I raced I had my bikes prepped for racing and I have a full termi exhaust on my Hyper, but that's about it.  However, I'm certainly not one of those people who spends 12k in upgrades on a 8k motorcycle.

defining worth by market value

You're thinking too binary.  You don't have to have one or the other, you can love something that also has market value, so why not have both?

So true.  My housemate drives (I use that term loosely) an 08 VW R32 (I still call it a Golf.  He doesn't approve) that rarely leaves the garage.  He's had it for two years now and the vast majority of the 16k miles are from driving two hours south to see family and driving the 120 mile one way drive to the dealership to have it serviced.  Every once and a while he'll update me on what his resale value is and I'll promtly remind him that the price he lost from brand new ($37k) to the "rated" resale of $26k is about 9 times more than I spent on my car back in college.  That still runs.  Reliably.

Anyway, he slid (AWD mind you) it into a curb trying to eek up a hill in the snow running MAYBE 15 miles an hour and caused $700 dollars worth of damage.  Granted, I'd love to be a card bearing member of the more money than brains club, but a $37k go kart with no trunk (subs) that he won't take out on the road for fear of scratching it is just asinine.

Now Cokey's Neon on the other hand is the balls no matter how much money he dumps into it.  Sure, he's got the $24k new cost plus the $10-13k extra, but that is a one of a kind vehicle that he has bonded with for years.  You can have your Enzos, Superleggeras and resale value.  I'll take the Ford Aerostar with a 440 six pack bolted into the back.  Oh, and racing stripes :)
