But getting the adapter means that in order to have your expanded memory, you have to have a cable hanging off of it... then if you want to watch that movie you have on your card on the tv with the HDMI capabilities you have to... wait... that means you cant.

why bother with a memory card when you can just keep your media on the device?

do you have a stash of large microSD cards laying around?

the xoom plus a 32gb microSD card is going to cost $870... a 64gb wifi+3g ipad is $829.

so even with the hdmi adapter the ipad is cheaper.

...or if you have an airplay capable device, stream directly with no cable needed!

Quote from: Punx Clever on March 05, 2011, 05:49:53 PMSo for $70 you get higher pixel density on a slightly larger screen, expandable storage, built in USB, built in HDMI, flash support, and 4g network capable.  At the expense of 130g (about a quarter pound) and 4mm of thickness.

i'll concede double the horizontal resolution on a negligibly larger screen. imho, i doubt that is going to have a major impact on the user experience.

4g capable? eventually, but not yet. and it looks like the "upgrade" will require living w/o your device for a week or two:  http://www.slashgear.com/verizon-details-motorola-xoom-4g-lte-upgrade-must-send-off-slate-24135767/

you say 4mm like it isn't almost half a centimeter and 130g like it isn't nearly the weight of an iphone.  ;D

i will say this, in the almost nine months i've had my ipad, i've never wished it was physically larger, had a larger screen, or weighed more.

Lots of pros and cons about ipad2. I'm considering buying one, but now...I'm not sure anymore...still thinking if it's worth the money.

Punx Clever

4mm is a little more than 1/8th an inch... So an 1/8th of an inch thicker and a quarter of a pound bigger on a device that can't be carried in my pocket?  Meh.  I'll take the added features.

MicroSD cards... so I have one in my phone... and one in a Xoom...  if I want to swap movie stashes, great! Just swap the cards.

AirPlay... so I'd need other apple approved / licenced products?  Particularly in the realm of A/V equipment? Meh, I'll take the standard HDMI, thanks.

4g upgrade... better to send it in for a week as opposed to being told that the new revolutionary 4g version has finally come out and I need to drop another $800 when the iPad 2 probably should have had it already.

At the end of the day, if you like the apple stuff, great! More power too you.  I just have a hard time understanding the frothing-at-the-mouth response that Steve Jobs gets anytime he takes a dump.

For the record, I have no use for the Xoom either.  [thumbsup]

i'm sure anybody that carries a tablet over their shoulder much of the time will appreciate the weight loss.

i have a microSD card in my phone, too... it pretty much just gets used for phone pics cause i have enough space on my 'pad for the media i consume on it.

1) the xoom doesn't even have it...
2) how's at&t's lte network going? oh yeah, working on mid-year.
3) verizon? currently available in only 38 market and not due for widespread deployment until 2013.

i think your expectations are likely unreasonable.

...the one you currently have is fine, but the new one w/ a dual core proc, (likely) more memory, cameras front and rear that's now also thinner than an iphone4 at the same price is "a complete waste of money"?

looks like the ipad2 is $70 cheaper than a xoom.  if needed, you can get a memory card reader for the 'pad for $29 and a hdmi adapter for $39.
your adapter setup just cost you $70 bucks.  more shit to carry which is not the purpose of my owning one.  I already have a phone with camera so I don't need it on the pad and more importantly an expandable memory which the pad does NOT have.  When the Xoom drops in price I'll consider one but Apple is NOT getting my money on this one....not this time.

didn't cost me $70 bucks!  ;D

i'd never walk around with a hdmi cable hoping to find a tv to plug my tablet into. when i'm at home, i have plenty of other media options to choose from before i'd resort to playing media on my tablet.

fwiw, i don't really have a need for the card reader, though i can see some situations where it could come in handy... it's just not worth $29 to me.

AFAIK anything to do with HDMI/video out requires a physical cable.

iPad2, as far as I can tell, cuts the essence of many tech habits to its essence of email & browsing the web.

My only question is regarding the creative side: Creating docs from scratch since Office is required for much of what I do ... yes you may reply iWorks ... but I need something with the complete palette of Word's doc styles, etc.

More ways to AirPlay.

Get even more play out of AirPlay â€" the wireless technology that lets you stream content from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to your HDTV via Apple TV. In addition to music, movies, and photos, AirPlay now streams video from your Photos app.

I see what you did there with that edit, you sly dog!  [coffee]

The point I'm making is, apples to apples, the xoom has more features than the iPad2 at the same price point.

I don't think I'd use up more than 32gb of space on one of the damn things... probably not even 10gb... but it would be nice to be able to swap in the card from my phone to get at the movies I have on there.

If I were at a hotel and wanted to watch a movie from the thing, I could pull out my handy dandy standardized hdmi cable, and either plug my phone into the tv, or the tablet into the tv.

the weight and size issue... I still argue that the difference of a freaking dr suess book isn't going to bother any reasonable person when it's in a backpack.  Maybe the 1/4lb would matter in a briefcase... and you carried it ALL day.

Again, if you like the style and marketing of apple products, great, go for it.  I just feel that there are better products from a technical standpoint.

well i have to agree that the ipad 2 is not for everybody but it was never meant to be.

its not supposed to replace a notebook computer, because like other say they stll need to type up real documents and such.

and for peopel that really need to do that they use notebook computers, do you really want to type up an entire document on a 6 inche or 7 inch screen with a 2/3 sized keyboard? let's get seriousl

the ipad is for what most people use it for, email webbrousing and reading books.

the big deal i thnk they are tring to do is make most things into apps that are basicaly touch screen user interface not much if any typeing more like just options to pick and such, that is why they show in teh commercials the dr using the ipad to show xrays and such, really that is more akin to reading a book rather than typeing a full document.

i thik the more that the apps apply to stuff that people use then it will be more integrated.  because lets face it a lot of people if given the choice between typing up something from scrath or using something that is more option interface will take the option interface becasue its quicker.

a backpack or briefcase? no.... carry it with you everywhere you go in a small messenger bag/shoulder bag and you'll definitely "notice" the weight.

I call BS on noticing 4oz.  That is the weight of a king size snickers or a small orange.  A heroin chic hipster that hasn't eaten in 3 weeks might notice 4 oz ...

I commuted on my bike for a year and a half with a backpack.  I can assure you adding an apple (the kind you eat!) would not make a noticeable difference in my load.   You wouldn't notice 4oz in a breifcase either.
