Just bought a 2000 m750 yesterday, needs a little work but I'll be well up to the task.  It's my first Ducati, but I'm somewhat familiar with them as about 4 years ago I did the training to be a level 2 tech.  Long story short Ended up getting a job that brought me to Antarctica instead of working on Bikes and so now after not having a summer in a long time I find myself back in New England with a new to me motorcycle.

Currently I have a DR650 which I'll be selling in a month or two a mp3 250 a Vstrom with a busted engine, a Rokon trailbreaker, Bultaco Alpina, and some other odds and ends kicking around...

Looking forward to learning as much as I can about this bike, again, and my first riding season in way too long.

On a side note, what's wrong with the 'strom's engine?  They are pretty hard to hurt in my experience.  If its the top end maybe a good excuse for a 1080 big bore and SV heads  [evil]

Well on the Vstrom I loaned it to my sister's fiance while I was out of the country figured it'd be good if someone rode it...  Well it had a set of crash guards on it that lost a screw and he heard a tapping noise and thought it was that well turned out to be a big end bearing that grenaded while he was riding it at 3am in the middle of nowhere in Alabama.  He tries to ride it at reduced power for about 45min then gets a lift home starts the bike lets it idle and revs it a whole bunch.  I finally pick him and the bike up drive them both back to Vermont where I was staying at the time and where my sister was.  At least I managed a trip to Barber out of that.  I drain the oil and it was super bad with tons of metal and looked as if he never changed it.  Supposedly he did more than he needed at a shop that was giving him a great price.  So now I have a partially disassembled Vstrom 650 that has been sitting for over a year waiting for him to give me cash to fix, Soon it'll just get to the point I'll want it out of my garage.

I could have fixed it a while ago honestly, and will most likely find a used motor off of ebay at some point for it.  Given the condition of the rod being super burned up where the bearing is I don't have much expectations for the crank being in that great of shape so new cranks and used motors look about the same price. 

lesson learned, don't lend stuff to future family if they can't pay to fix it when they break it...

So you're probably well aware that the belts probably need to be attended to, if you haven't already. But seems like an easy enough job for you.

Thanks for the run-down.  Loosing the big-end is pretty rare on the 'strom.  Could have been defective, but if it was low on oil for some reason that'd sure do it.  I'd think that even if the oil had 15k miles on it you still wouldn't loose a big-end like that, but who knows - not a theory I plan to test!

Maybe rebuild your stock motor as a little big bore/long stroke hot-rod.  Could be pretty entertaining  [cheeky]

Well here is a shot of the monster as it is right now, had to move it out side to get some stuff out of my garage.  Need to pick up some fuel line and a filter and it'll be on the road this week as long as work and family stuff doesn't get in the way.   Until then it's gonna be me and my mp3! [moto]
