I'm glad to hear your friend is OK, but...

Does anybody _really_ believe those fashionable little titanium patches on your jacket can do anything to protect you against dislocating your shoulder? Call me cynical, but if you've got enough energy/force to dislocated a shoulder, a few square inches of titanium Dianese logo isn't going to make any difference...

big

the ti/al on shoulders isnt for impact protection, they're there to promote sliding.  sliding = good, tumbling = bad

well, you are right abt the ``enough energy/force``
any idiot knows that nothing is going to protect you from dislocating/breaking your bones if you hit the wall doing a buck 20 ...
but theres a proof of a skid at 40-50mph at the ezpass booth , hitting the side of the curb with the shoulder and that little fashionable titanium patch saved my boy from dislocating/breaking his arm/shoulder and the good quality leather saved  his skin from burning.. and i don't even want to start talking abt the leather pants and boots..
Long story short, if you ride at normal speeds and u go down .. good gear will save your ass, period.  8)

There's likely a shoulder pad in the jacket...which is what prevented an injury.

They might also stop some penetration by a sharp object like a branch , nail or something similar that you might slide into on the street in a get off.

A car changed lanes into me while we were riding a large group.
20 plus riders, I had 2 riders behind me.
We were going 85 mph.
I was wearing tourmaster cortech.
It saved my life.

Lose some money.
Keep some skin.
