Welding in Sydney

Parked bike in city last week in one of the bike free parking zone things. If you dont know 'em, they can get pretty tight and people tend to jam shitty step thrus in spots where they really shouldn't fit. Anyway, got back to the bike and my precious Sargent seat was sitting on the ground next to my bike! [bang] [bang] [bang] - someone must have tried to move the bike by the fkn seat or something, because they managed to *snap* the seat holding latch pin thing off the seat. Riding home with an unlatched seat in the wet was rubbish.

What I need from my ever helpful monster pals is some advice on
a) Can I actually get this welded? if so, where at?
b) Will it be safe once I do? The last thing I want is for it to snap again when I am cranked over in T1 or something.

Any assistance or advice appreciated. I have been riding on the stock monster seat for a week now and it's just not the same  :'(

Hey Craigo,

I wouldn't want to weld it, as it looks like it's cad plated, and cadmium is pretty toxic when you weld it.  Can ya get a replacement piece from Sargent?

If you really have to weld it, remove as much of the plating as you can from around where the weld bead will go.

Sorry to ask an OTT question but can't you park your bike anywhere you want on the footpath (within reason) in Sydney like it is in Melbourne? Is it designated spots only in Sydder's?

You're showing too much restraint.

Definitely designated spots only. Parking on the footpath is only done by a select group of hooligans at a certain inner west coffee house [roll]

NO footpath parking in Sydney, like there is in Melbourne.
Each council may be different... but for SCC (Sydney City):
You can park anywhere a regular car can park.. advantage is you don't need a ticket, but you MUST adhere to the time limits.
There are also dedicated "bike only" parking areas.

Well i suppose if you want to categorize it,
What would be the safest past time  ???

I would say welding cad plate would be safer than riding motorcycles on Sydney roads :P [roll] [Dolph]

Wow that's a pain, I just put the bike anywhere I want as long as it doesn't block the footpath or hinder disabled folk. Sux to be you lot up north [thumbsdown]

I still find it amazing that some douche tried to move your bike like that though. I bet they didn't hang around afterwards.

Thanks all, I am going to visit Rob down the beaches at and get this sorted. I'll stay away from the fumes Suzy.  [roll]

As for parking: I have never seen so many bikes so close together. But given how much it costs to park in Sydney CBD, I thought it was worth the risk. Bzzt.

As for touching other peoples bikes: Even with permission I don't like touching other peoples bikes. It just aint right.

Agreed... though I have moved a guys scooter side ways by a couple of feet as he was parked in the middle of two spots.

Do at least have a go at it with emery to remove as much of the plating as you can from the weld area.  Oh, and don't forget to floss!

Problem solved thanks to Rob and his pro welding skills down at the beaches. Identified a whole other bunch of potential stuff the fix as well. Thanks mate!

Additionally had running commentary from BrianW on thats tacky looking MV thing. There is really only one place for that bike and it's eastern creek.
