Cutting carbon fiber?

I have a carbon rear hugger that the previous owner of my bike had on it. I took it off because it was big and kinda ugly, but now I have to put up with chain grease flying all up under my seat and making a mess. I thought it would be cool to cut the fender so it's smaller and doesn't hug the tire as much, but I have no idea how to go about cutting carbon fiber without making it fray and look nasty.

Has anyone had any experience with this? Any advice?

Thanks!

I use a dremel.

Rough cut with whatever bit will work (usually a cutting wheel), and then finish sand.
