A virus warning written by an anti-virus company? Oh no!  I should buy their software so it doesn't affect my Mac!

Just an example of how they are, contrary to popular belief, susceptible to the junk floating around on the interwebs.

To be honest, I run my computer without virus/malware protection and have only been impacted one or two times since I started building my own rigs in high school (10 years or so now).  Hell, I haven't even been that careful about it... I commonly use bittorrent.

Point being, Macs are not filled with pixie dust and unicorn farts and can be screwed up pretty badly if you aren't careful, same as a windows box.

True, but most of the viruses and stuff I've ever seen or dealt with were designed to dick with Windows directories and settings.

Macs are certainly susceptible, they're just not usually the intended target.

So IZ's thread about his computer taking a dump is now one debating the merits of a Mac vs. a PC?

If you don't run antivirus, how do you know that your computer is not already infected?

Like I said..all icons removed from desktop.  Several more small icons in the bottom right corner.

All photos are gone.  LUCKILY, I downloaded everything to an external drive.

There are photos in my pictures section that I just downloaded but when I try to select them for photobucket, it says "no items match my search"??

two years with a Mac without issues.  price just about kills you but the benefit of not hassling with bullshit viruses (until now) is worth it.  just saying......

i'm assuming you're running vista/win7.... what folders are under c:\users?

i'm wondering if your profile got corrupted and it created a "clean" one for you. if so, your data is still in the "old" profile directory.

I run an Anti Virus Program on my Mac, 99% of the time it is pretty quiet, the 2 or 3 times it has gotten upset and thrown up alerts, it was for Windows Viruses hidden in Email Attachments.

I've never been a big believer in the whole Mac vs PC thing, I like Mac, it works for me, and has been a trooper for over 6 years now (Mac Mini)

That's the only problem with a Mac, the Eye watering prices when it comes time to replace or Upgrade.

Hell, Apple doesn't even acknowledge the creaky old OSX Tiger Macs we have at home, why would you expect virus writers to bother with 'em?  ;D

My wife ran into an issue over the summer where whatever she caught made all her files "hidden".

Open a folder, go to Folder Options, and on the View tab check the radio button under the "Hidden files and folders" section to "Show hidden files and folders".

It might be they just hid everything on you.
