Turning a 400cc monster into a SportsClassic 1000 BIPOSTO?

Hello everyone, I just bought in HK for a very good price a 2002 Ducati, 400cc monster.. Its a model that was only sold in Japan for what I understand...

I wanted to know if its possible to chance the tank and tail for that of the SportClassic 1000 Biposto?
Has anybody done this before?

I think the frame of the 400 is bascially teh same of the 600 ... has it been done ona  600?  the things is I just cant afford the SportsClassic but love it...  love the cafe racer style look...

hey if we can put a man on the moon.. we can convert a monster into a sportclassic right...  ?

but I wanted to get more of a feel for all of you ducati connoisseurs if the pieces match or if do you ahve to completley botch them... slight adjutmets are ok.. but no use ruining them right!?

two very different frames, you will have a hard time putting it together without it looking werid.

aisde from that, not only could u probably not afford it right now, but you would have a hard tiem looking for one. they arent easy to find. theres only about 3 for sale on the whole east coast of the US.

Different frames. And you will have to hunt down the tank, seat, cowl etc.

Can it be done? With enough time and money, yes.  Likely to exceed what you would have to pay for a SportsClassic, and more painful / enjoyable.

It will not be possible. However!

if you can find a sport1000 frame, swingarm ,tank,seat, and clip ons  there is a reasonable possibility that a majority of your parts would transfer over.

first things I would check would be cases at the swingarm pivot as they would need to match (or be close enough to shim or grind away.)  there is a good chance that your forks are the same diameter as the sport1000 which would potentially allow you to use your monsters forks, brakes, and rims (have to check that the triples and swingarm arent spaced too differently).

there are a lot of "ifs" that you would need to figure out but in the end it would be kinda rad to see a 400cc sport classic. And once you collected the parts you could swap it all over in a weekend and sell of the unused monster pieces to fund the project.

there was a thread with some pics of a guy who's makig Sport classic style parts to fit on monster frames.

Will take a while to find but it's there. Superwide tank to fit over the monster frame and Cafe style tail.
would be a much cheaper route to the switch though.

Surely it would be better / easier to make your bike into a cafe racer and give it some styling elements from the sport-classic range?

Aounds to me like you are giving yourself an awful lot of work for something that would be easier and cheaper to buy the genuine item.

Dont get me wrong I like and admire the spirit, but feel this is one project that would benefit from a bit more time spent on thought / planning / options

probably best to try to make it look as much cafe as possible!  the italian site with the fiberglass is a definite prospect!

a more cost effective approach might be just making a monster cafe. There are a number of good cafe conversions here. The 400 is made in all the spirit of a cafe bike...I say GO FOR IT! Evan Wilcox could make you a sport classic style tank to fit your monster for less than the retail of a new tank from Ducati...the seat and bum stop are easy parts to come up with as well.

The biggest issue with the sport classic tank is that the tunnel where it fits over the sport classic frame is narrower than the monster frame.  It won't sit down around the frame properly and since they are plastic rather than steel tanks, they cannot simply be cut and widened to fit.  The sport classic tanks also have a large sump at the rear of the tank that hangs down and interferes with almost everything. 

Due to the tank expansion issues, you may be able to pick up a rejected tank for cheap and cut the bottom out and use it as a cover.  Another solution would be to build your own tank and seat, or sell your bike and build one off of a supersport chassis.  Good luck though and nice to see some custom builds!

Sell off your tank, bars, seat, exhaust and foot peg brackets. Shop around for cafe style seats like at slipstream cycles. Or buy yourself some compositing materials and make your own seat (not too hard). Then do an ebay search for Ducati gas tanks. Many tanks *can work depending on your skills, tools, patience, and/or money.
I am making my own fiberglass racer seat/tail and I fit a 1996 900ss tank on my 1999 monster.
