New Rider and Monster owner - Toronto

I just got my first bike last night, and I went with a Monster 695.  Should be interesting to learn on!

Will be using the bike mainly for my commute to work downtown Toronto.  The transit here is horrid and I'm tired of coming into work sweating after the long bike ride.

Wife wanted me to get a scooter, so I convinced her that the Monster is just a small bike, not fast enough to get dangerous ;)

This is how the lies begin. Next up it's "I need that part from Rizoma. Really" Mmmhmmm

bike all serviced up? Got the records?
-Throttle's on the right, so are the brakes.  Good luck.
- '00 M900S with all the farkles
- '08 KTM 690 StupidMoto
- '07 Triumph 675 Track bike.

I have all the records, original owner and even the mechanic's phone number who's worked on it since new.

However, there seems to be oil leaking from somewhere.  I'm working with owner/mechanic now to see where it's coming from, but are there any common areas to check out?

is it up to date on belts? 2 year of service so if they are older than that you should get a new set on.

Common spots are the filter and dran plug. Give the filter an additional 1/4 turn and see if that heals it... though any notion of location? Or what's leading you to the leak conclusion ?

He just did the belts so we're all set there, but I will definitely check the filter (already checked the drain plug).

It is collecting on the bottom of the engine, but could be coming either from the heads or from the drive pully (that could also just be build up of chain oil though).

I read some about possibly the filter so i'll try that, and also the slave cylinder?  The bike has 27,000km on it, and just completed the 24,000 service recently (belts, etc.).

I was thinking of just cleaning the motor this weekend and using some powder to see where it's leaking.... good suggestion?

Yep good plan. Hard to track down a leak on a dirty bike

The slaves are known to give it up. So that is possible. Leaking brake fluid from the clutch slave will rinse off with water only, oil would not. But if the bikes a bit grimy it could be hard to tell

Another potential source is the O-rings on the clutch push rod are worn and allowing oil to seep by. Good news there is its about $2 and not much time to fix yourself.

It's least likely that it's coming from a head. Possibly but not likely. Way bigger chance that it's those o-rings or the slave.

Okay so another week and more inspection each time I ride.

First thing, even after all this leaking the oil level is at or slightly above the tick marks on the window.

I've tracked the leak back to the clutch slave cylinder.  This would make sense considering the previous owner was very experienced and probably didn't use the clutch a lot compared to me who uses it constantly for shifting and stop/go traffic.

Is there a spot to check the clutch fluid level?  Also, would this be the O-ring issue that everyone talks about?

After searching the forums and finding a lot of information, I beleive this is definitely a slave o-ring issue.

Unfortunately the hours I work won't allow me to get to the dealership for o-rings, can they be bought from a hardware store, and if so what are the specifications?

Post this in tech so that people see your question. Not all that many check the intros. Can't you just ring your dealer and have him pop them in the mail?
