Hey gang, Wondering what a decent 02 or 03 Track only 748 is worth. It is in good shape and runs well with upgraded rear suspension and slipper clutch. A friend of mine is selling his along with a trailer. I know he never raced it, just track days, intermediate class. Any direction/knowledge would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Steve

... more details. Price Erm, that's what I'm trying to figure out ;D, milesDon't know (no speedo/odo, just tach), mods, serviceDon't know, who did it, more mods???? Rocker problems? Again who did that? Must have mo info.
I understand you nor anyone could give a firm value without more info and at least pics. I'm more or less looking for price ranges, or the best he could expect to get. Let's just say it is stock engine, well kept and serviced appropriately, made in 2002 or 2003 with upgraded rear suspension and a slipper clutch. Oh, tires saw a morning session on the track. I do appreciate all the help by the way.
Thanks,
Steve

I wouldn't  mind finding one of those for meself. Have no idea what they go for.

I'd be happy to set you two (and anyone else interested) up to haggle/barter/chat. He also is trying to sell his trailer along with the 748. I don't know if he wants his info on the list yet or not. Just being respectful.

KBB says 5200 to 8000 for street version '02 748 which was the last year they sold the bike.  By track day only I assume that certain parts are not installed but available or not even available (headlight, wiring, kickstand, stock fairing, etc.) which will diminish its value.

Good question about lights, wiring, etc. Charles. Steve, no problem with not spreading your buddy's info all over the internet. [thumbsup] Does the scoot have the original fairing or does it have after market track skins? Has it ever been down or torn up? Is it still torn up? Problem is I have seen way too many "track only" bikes that look they were drug behind a truck with a chain to the track and around it, then back home. I have also seen some that are street scoots that were never ridden on the street but were in concours condition with just the lights taped and tires scuffed in. Don't mean to be difficult, just don't know where this bike fits. I get the slipper clutch but does "upgraded rear suspension" mean Ohlins? Or does it mean a spring change on the original Showa? I'd suggest just looking at ebay motors, the Ducati section, and try and find an '02 748 and bounce around with that price. The trailer? Who knows?

I know a few people that are looking for a second bike.  Mostly street use though.

I would say about 4500, depending on whether or not the rocker problem has been addressed.

The way you say that it has been converted to track only (no speedo, etc) will obviously lower the price, and the fact that it is a track slut will mean parts are more worn, damaged than usual (flogging the bike, get offs, etc)

I was looking into these a while back and that was the price range for track only bikes (4000-6000) depending on suspension and performance mods.

More info is needed, of course, but that price seems about right.

He has clean title in hand, was purchased from AMS with 2216 miles. Title says TONLY06, I'm taking that to mean it was not registered thus not having a plate but doesn't mean it is a salvage or not streetable. It would need all the street gear to be leagal though. Having said all that, He realizes he will NOT get anywhere near what he has in it. He said he'd like to get a fair price and doesn't want to jerk anyone around so he's laying it on the table. He just doesn't have an idea where to start.
Also, He's also selling an MC trailer too but, Let's get the bike sorted first eh?

Gee, dunno, guessing maybe 5K?? I know what I spent on my Tamburinis but this is a whole different show? Are you wanting to buy it yourself and keep it a track only sled? Or is your friend just wanting to sell it period, to anyone? Bummer, but he's right. You don't EVER get out of a bike what you put into it moneywise, that's a given. I'm with the former Chipo, between 4K and 6K and that's where I get my 5K guesstimate. Still have no clue regarding the trailer.

Wish him luck with the sale.

Hey, maybe he should take it or have someone take it to an AMS track day just for show and tell. That would be the kind of folks that might be interested in a tracked Tamburini! He'd have a captive audience!

If this bike with all that is on it was a street bike, I suppose he could consider $7200 as a fair price.

Something to consider however is that the KBB lists the trade in price of a 748R as $5900 while retail is $8635.  $7200 falls right in the middle and would be a fair price for an R bike (discounting the fact that the R is a very desirable bike because of the motor).  Unfortunately, your friend's bike is not an R, despite the upgrades.  The R bike had Ohlins suspension front and rear, marchesini 5 spokes and was a monoposto only which probably meant the rear subframe was aluminum instead of steel.  Consequently, the bike was listed as being 10 lbs lighter than the regular 748 and 14 lbs less than a 998.

If someone wanted to convert the bike back for street use it would cost them say $2K maybe $3K?  I'm just thinking aloud here but if it were me thinking of buying such a bike, I would look at it that way.  So he may have to lower the price below $7200.

Considering the above, if it is as nice as it appears to be on paper being an unregistered track only bike, I would agree with Brian and maybe $5000 would be what I would offer too.

I hate to knock a Duc down but El Matador (the former Chipo) also brought up an otherwise little discussed issue the Ducs had during that time period.  The flaking rockers syndrome.  Even after 6 years, I recently discovered, my '02 ST4S had developed flaking rockers.  So it is possible, unless this bike has had the rockers really examined, it too might have flaking rockers (kind of like dandruff but worse).

Didn't meant to rain on your friend's parade but that is the skinny on the bike from my perspective.

As a bike set up for track only, he's looking at a small market.   But if he did find someone looking for a bike to track only, $6K maybe a little more would not be bad.  Anyone looking for a track only bike?  Ronr?

During my daily look around of used Ducs I've found a few 74x bikes and they tend to be around the $5-6k range depending on condition of course.

There's a' 99 748 in the FS section that has full service records and a good amount of extras that's only asking $5k.

On CL Houston, there's a '04 749s track bike asking only $5k

The value is whatever a person wants to pay for it.  Patience...

Since *** brought up the 749R - Salvaged title!

I brought up the rocker question in the second post and Chipo (sorry, I keep calling you that and will for a while!) brought it up too. I am assuming (and this is a big assumption) that since he bought the bike from Jeff he probably had the service at AMS also. If that is the case, I would like to think Jeff knows all about the potential rocker issue and someone at AMS has checked that out... but only if they have done the actual service on the bike. Also, since there is no speedo then how in the world have service intervals been estimated? By number of laps? Estimated mileage based on number of laps at XXX track? Anyone who knows their poop about Tamburinis, especially 748s, will be interested in that info. Just changing the oil after every track day isn't enough for those with inquiring minds. Just a thought.

Could be a great track day bike deal for someone out there. [moto]

PS.  David (aka Hiero) has a 748 and probably has a better feel for the market for such bikes.  Maybe he'll pick up on the thread and post.
