Well, there is always the company that makes modified diesel versions of Kawasaki's KLR650 for the Marines.  They are working up a civilianized version of it and it is reported to get close to 100mpg.  All of that with a seven gallon tank!!

I think it comes down to commuting vs. canyons.  I use my bike for both, but commuting is the bulk of my miles.  Give me mileage - in the long run I'll save enough to buy a second bike.

Are there any tech specs to back up that ~50HP 100mpg concept?

I saw that article, and If memory serves me, the HP is a dismal number, like under 20hp (don't hold me to that), and top speed is under 60mph.  I would not be interested in a monster that performed like that.

Say Bob, why don't these folks quit complaining about the fuel cost and buy a scooter?

I dunno Jim, seems most people just have their minds stuck in "what if" mode and don't bother doing anything to fix their perceived problem.

Looks like a lot of people would go for a 100 MPG bike with 50 HP, but how low would you go as far as power? What if it was 30 HP? 20?

I would go low, I'm already at less than 20 hp but I get 75-80 mpg on my CRF230.
Its really not that bad, if you have another bike to rip around on!

How about electric? A recent popular motorcycle publication had an article on a very sexy "superbike" looking electric bike. Think of the Electric Monster, max torque at 0 RPM, could be fun and "green". Just a thought.

whats the point in havinga hooligan bike, if you cant be a hooligan.
About the same time you're dragging your knees through a series of tight left-right-handers on Sunday afternoon, some guy in white shoes is sweating a 3-foot putt. Go figure.

I came back from Denver last Friday, drove around all week, and just put gas in this pm. $10-$12 dollars a tank..... Naw I'll keep the power, it's like paying $5 etra a week to have fun. Well worth it in my opinion. Now if you could make the bike significantly cheaper so that buying it was a better deal as well perhaps. Let's face it though Ducati's aren't really for frugally minded people, we can rationalize all we want. But at the end of the day we are willing to pay a premium for a certain ride. If we were that worried about a little extra gas money we prolly woulda bought a Hyosung.

I just bought my wife a brand new 2008 ford focus to haul the baby around in, and since I am the sole income in the family, she can't tell me not to buy the 696 that I want... but the increased mpg would definitely be a selling point.  Besides, if I was buying a motorcycle purely for hp and speed, I would have bought a cookie cutter Jap bike, but where's the fun in that?

Yea, the hp numbers were really low, but the torque was through the roof!  I have ridden one of the Marine Corps bikes a few times and those things have all kinds of grunt (no pun intended).
