ive had a few "jap bikes" over the last 15 years. I love my ducati.. but I gotta be honest here, in terms of reliability.. its at the bottom of the list of any bike ive ever owner. I never owned a jap bike that spontaneously started spewing OIL, has recurring electrical issues (light, horn, turn signals) or requires MULTIPLE stabs at the starter button , JUST to get it started. While this has been the NORM for my 1100, which i bought NEW in 2009.  All of my jap bikes, just needed GAS!

With that said.. all of my jap bikes sounded the same and FELT the same.. like SOULESS sewing machines or weedwackers!  weeeeeee, click, weeeeeeeeeeeee, click, weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaarrrrrrrrrr, click.

I never rode a machine.. that felt alive.. and that in turn, made me feel happy to be living.. and distinctly aware that I might die.. if i made a mistake. I ride my ducati.. with my eyes WIDE open, because she DEMANDS it.  I wouldnt have it any other way.

Like someone else said somewhere on this forum.

There's nothing wrong with Japanese bikes at all.  They are fine machines, generally very well engineered and built, high quality, and excellent value for money.  I'm quite certain I could ride Hondas all my life and be very happy with them.

I happen to very much like the design and feel of Italian machinery, so that's what I am most likely to buy, ride, and/or drive.  I won't say that they are objectively "better" than the Japanese bikes, but they aren't necessarily worse either.  I recognize that I am spending some extra money to buy, and some extra time/money to maintain, them, and I do that willingly because I like them better.

I do not see any value in dissing the choices of others -- if someone likes and wants to ride a Harley, a Vespa, a Kawasaki, a Rokon, or whatever -- cool, have fun.  I choose the Ducati; I like it, it fits me well physically, and it suits my riding style and usage well.

I've testridden a lot of bikes in the past few years, for fun, and to see what's out there, to think about what I would get if I needed a new bike, and my short list for a high budget has 5 Italian, 1 German, and 2 American bikes on it.  My short list for a lower budget (~$10K) has one Italian, one British, and 1 Japanese bikes on it.  (Although the lists could have more Japanese bikes if the dealers weren't so crappy at allowing test rides.)

Bottom line is the OP's question is baseless and petty (as others have pointed out).  This 'I'm better than you' because I have a Ducati and you have a 'jap' bike mentality tarnishes the perceived image of all Ducati owners.

I came from a '08 CBR1000RR before my '11 Monster 796 and I feel it was neither an upgrade nor a downgrade...just different, that's all.

I ride with a couple of old buddies who still have antiques, '82 fairing-less goldwing and an '88 ninja 900.
Doesn't matter what you ride.....just ride.
this summer we revived a mothballed '86 ninja600 without an engine rebuild.this thing spent almost 20 years in a shed

Just discovered this, and have no time to read it all now, so this may have been mentioned already.

I like Japanese bikes.

But face it, they are the bike of choice for squids.

Let us not do anything to make Ducatis the bike of choice for squids.

That is all.

Agreed with most before me.....no need to convince other's.....just to ride a bike is the main choice.

That said.....to choose a Ducati is kinda a lifestyle; hobby; club mentality etc.   Japanese bikes generally cost less, have more power etc, etc and generally are know to be more reliable with less maintenance.

It's like comparing a Gucci cotton dress shirt with a cotton button down from Sear's.....they both cover your chest.....but that's where the similarities end!!

My main reason in choosing Ducati they are very unique ....women love them & women have B--Bies!! [evil] [beer]

I'm surprised this thread is still going.

I'm concentrating on paying the bills, living with a woman, not getting shot at work, when is the best time to put my ailing cat down, am I making the best use of my time on Earth, etc, etc....I'm certainly not going to spend any time trying to convince someone one motorcycle is better then the other.
