Sadly, more people than you would assume.  I think it's more common knowledge these days that it's a scam,  but I've seen plenty of articles about people who wired their entire life savings out of the country via Western Union thinking they were going to be rich.  The elderly are often targeted because they're unfamiliar with the scam and can often be more trusting, especially as mental faculties begin to slip a little.
