Dropped my Monster!!

Man, I finally saved up enough to buy a 2003 Monster 620 ie.  I've been saving for awhile now and was thrilled to finally get my dream bike for a great price!

So what happens one week in?  My nephew decides to jump on it during a family bbq and proceeds to drop it down a hill!  I am so damn sick to my stomach.  Long story short, left shifter peg snapped in half, footrest bent and a good dent in my tank.  All in all things could have been worse but I'm just heartbroken.

I'm gonna have to save up to fix what I can.  Do you guys have any advice on options for the shifter and footrest?

Also, have any of you guys dealt with a dent like this?  Unfortunately I don't have access to a lot of tools on my end so I'm even thinking of taking it to a dent removal service?

dropping your bike for the first time sucks...

if there's no fractures... heat up parts with a heat gun and try to bend back.

You might be able to bend the shifter back in. As for the foot peg, I bet you somebody on this forum might donate one to you as many folks have replaced the stock ones with after market parts.

Good news the passenger position foot peg will swap to the rider position. They are the same. Just pull the passenger off *note* there's a spring and two ball bearings in the peg that keep it up or down. When you remove it wrap it in a rag or something as one will shoot out.

The rides peg is held down by a sprint just take note of where its oriented.

As mentioned remove the shifter, apply some heat and give it a bash. You should be able to work it back - probably.

The tank... Well the cheap path is do nothing. Other option is to fill and paint.

How old is the nephew? Was he told not to touch? Fixing the tank and replacing the damaged bits is several hundred dollars... Perhaps talk to his dad about an object lesson ie doing chores or something for you until the 'debt' is paid off. Your family, you know best though

also your bike will be fine... now you have a legitimate opportunity to customize and replace stock parts.

Hey guys, thanks for the replies!

I'm going to try to bend the shifter back in.  Its not too badly bent.  Maybe a rubber mallet might help.
As for the foot peg, I'll post and see if anyone might have a spare that I could purchase on the forum!
Although speaking of pegs, do you guys suggest any aftermarket ones that I could install?

I'll just have to live with the tank.  Its not too bad and maybe I could save up to purchase a new one in the future.

Oh yeah and I didn't let him take a ride.  He's a curious pre-teen who wanted to hop on when it was parked and I was away.  Long story short he kicked up the kickstand and took a tumble down the driveway.

I know I was initially so angry.  But that anger turned to worry because he got a pretty nasty gash from the peg after it snapped in half.  It required a bit of stitches so I was just thankful that he didn't get more hurt than that.  Lesson learned for him without any real damage and a nice future scar to remind him I guess.

Aren't pegs essentially the same regardless of model?

I've got a slightly scuffed set of S2R ones... but the fleabay knockoffs aren't really that expensive and will work.

Assuming you're in the US, the dent shouldn't be hard to pull, and a repaint is $150 at MAACO.
