County allows up to three junk cars visible

This is why HOA's exist and will continue to exist.

I wonder if the theoretical prevention of a decrease in property value due to eyesores is offset by the less attractive issue of dealing with an HOA.

I bet it might have something to do with it. Whenever I look at a property that has all sorts of nice features and the attractiveness scale is up around 10 then the thought of an HOA or CC&R lowers it a point or so. Then I think you don't even know the half..another point lost.

I will say, as we look at a house, before we go into much detail about it, we request the platt AND the homeowner's agreement.  We have already nixed two houses over HOA.

Yep.  [thumbsup]

HOAs suck...but so does a neighbor with a bunch of junkers sitting on their lawn!

there's typically ordinances about such a thing, without meddling neighbors.

I don't understand why some people are so intent to sign up for more rules, some of which often ban motos. What sort of item is this board centered around again?

Never said I liked HOAs. I'd read the rules carefully if I ever wanted a house in a development with them. I wouldn't want a neighbor with broken down cars either though (or a collection of motorhomes parked on the street, etc)...even if they were allowed by the local ordinances (like Journeyman suggested).

How many non HOA owners have neighbors like that?

One of the places my wife and I looked at limited the number of pet to 1 dog and 2 cats.  They also had a provision that would lead to a ban of any vehicle that creates a disturbance.  Basically, it targets loud motorcycles.  We passed that one up too.

More than HOA owners.

All I did was agree with hbliam that there's a reason HOAs exist...people aren't always considerate of their neighbors. Some HOAs are OK, some are horrible...just like everything in life.

Keep in mind, HOAs can do more than make goofy rules. Many neighborhoods have common landscape areas, parks, pools...these all need maintenance, which the HOA takes care of via dues. Similar situation for condo and townhouse developments.

I have a nice neighbor that has a broken down car sitting on the street. There are also a couple of pretty trashy houses on my block. I can live with it. One thing you can do is talk with your neighbors, fix up your place. It rubs off, the next thing you know some of the other neighbors are fixing their place up too. It helps.

We have a pretty good set of neighbors right now. No junk, yards kept up, no weekly wild parties, safe for the kids to run amok. Our City is pretty good about code enforcement anyway. A broken down car on the street would be gone in 3 days. Visible on your property would take a month or two but it would be gone too. RV's are not allowed to park on the street except for loading/unloading.

I choose not to live in a HOA because I don't want someone telling me what color to paint my house and when. Or that I can't leave my garage door open while I work on stuff in the garage (A HOA near us told one of my friends this, he moved).

HOA's are a necessary evil in places that allow 3 junk cars in a driveway (or lawn, the ultimate in trashiness) and such BS. If people want to live like that there are plenty of places with large tracts of land where you can collect to your hearts content and not force someone to live next to your landfill. I think they call it Kentucky and Bakersfield (sorry BP  ;)).

Agreed. But common courtesy would lead the owner of such to keep it in the garage, workshop, or out of view as its being molded into its latest form.
