Its facinating but its also monsterous to  pour hot aluminum down an ant hole just to have something to look at.

Actually worked on Arc furnaces like this a couple years back, 4 Mw of serious melting capacity, the guys were moving a full pot one night after an 8 hour cook and managed to tip it over, that got pretty messy.

I'd not necessarily be against aliens doing this to a human city for research so can't stand up for the rights of the ants as vehemently as you have either.
