the family and I are going to Hawaii for spring break...anybody have any advice on cheap options for getting around the big island. we're staying on Kauai for a week in a timeshare, and will have a cheap rental during our time there, but we'll be in Honolulu for two nights. the hotels there are crazy expensive and they all charge extra to park a rental.

im not finding any deals on hotel/car deals.

anybody have any island advice?

You have to have a car if you want to see the island. You have AAA to get a discount?

Triple J

You need a car regardless on the islands...especially the big island. Nothing is close to anything else there. Sorry, no clue on how to get a good deal other then the standard rental agencies. vrbo.com is a good way for places to stay though.

When are you going? We'll be on Kauai mid-March.

I'd like to avoid another rental car. other that going pearl harbor, i don't think we'll go anywhere than a beach. is the bus system any good there?

The tour is free at Pearl Harbor and one of the best things to do on the island. You'll miss out on alot of cool stuff if you don't get a car though plus after a week at the timeshare I bet you are going to have had your fill of the beach. Two days even with parking at the hotel is worth it IMO so you can see everything.

teddy073.3 to the white courtesy phone, please.

When I was on Oahu a few years back, we rented scooters and bombed around that way.  Not sure if that's an option for you guys, but just throwing it out there.

You'll definitely want a car on the big island, however.  You're going to Kauai, not Hawaii (the island), and I've got no experience there.

Unfortunately, Hawaii and Cheap do not belong in the same sentence.

most hotels in large downtown cities (be it in the continental US or Hawaii) charge to park a car. I am not sure you can escape that one.

Have you tried naming your own price on www.priceline.com?

the bus system's pretty good; it'll get you to pearl and back easily enough.  if you're only on the rock for two nights (and staying in waikiki, I assume) most everything is accessible on foot.  that said, I have no experience taking the bus to/from the airport... I've seen shuttle services advertised on TV, that might be an option for ya.

gracias [thumbsup]

the more we dig around...the bus sounds like the best option for the big island, and using an airpot shuttle to get to the airport.

I'll see you in Honolulu, I too will be there for spring break with the family. I'll be the guy with the guy with the relaxed look on his sunburned face.
He man, where are all the ads?
