Stuck in Gear

My '08 Hyper will not shift out of second gear and the lever is stuck in the lowest position.

Research on Ducati.ms tells me that there may be a broken spring/return inside the gears.

This is not too uncommon and is not limited to Hypers.

Not sure yet if I will attempt to open it up and fix this - probably a $20 part and hours of labor IMHO :P

Thought I would post this in case anyone else has similar experience in the future.   :)

It it imperative if this happens to ride only as far as you absolutely need to.

It can go from "just a spring" to a whole lot more.

I got the alternator cover off and have a limited view of the inner gear works.  

I'll tear it down further another day and try to figure out what is the problem.

No big hurry as alternator cover gasket is ordered (California Cycle Works).

If you're adding a gasket, make sure you check the shimming of any sensors in that cover that might be affected.

+1. Threebond it if it didnt have a gasket.
Take close up pics for reference and compare to a manual or pics of an undamaged unit. You want to know what it should look like when repaired. The mechanism needs to be in the correct position. Others here will explain it better.

Got the shifter working!  And did NOT have to remove the flywheel! ;D

The internal "actuator" lever had spring to a hyper forward position.  With a little manipulation, it sprang back to the proper position.  There is a short YouTube (~ 25 secs) on the same issue.

Gasket should get here Wednesday, so possible riding this weekend  [Dolph]

Check the adjustment of that actuator lever. There is a witness mark on it that should be centered on one of the pins on the shift drum when the transmission is in neutral.

If it isn't it will happen again.

Hopefully the witness mark is close enough.  Seems to shift as usual - and now I can visualize the false neutral I get at times.

That is way out of position.

Hashmark should line up with the center of the pin.

Yup. That's at least half a pin off.

When you get it adjusted, remove the two screws, one at a time of course, and use a dab of blue loctite on them.

I did not realize the position needs to be more accurate on the witness mark and shift drum alignment.

Many thanks again for the excellent input!

I still have to clean old "gasket" material, adjust new gasket to fit 3 yellow wire input.

Also have set of bolts coming in from Desmo Times that I may get to use (OEM are a bit corroded looking on the heads).

I'm learning new terms too, like "witness mark".  And "gasket" too  ;D
