2016 M696 adjust rear brake light

My brake light stays on.  The instructions I have found are a bit confusing and it looks like a PITA for these old bones to crawl underneath the beast.
.
Ergo, I want to do this as few times as possible but I guess there is no choice but getting up and down constantly to check when the light goes out.

And there may be a left hand thread involved?
Any detailed suggestions on how to adjust this?

Park the bike close to something - you'll be able to see the light reflection without getting up. (bring a pillow and a beer for comfort while being down)

How do you know it's the rear lever(/pedal)? Anyway: that lever is adjustable as described in the owner's manual. Too much might stop the lever from contacting the switch upon the return..... If I remember the lever adjustment vs switch operation. No left hand thread there.

Inspect the micro switch and you'll have an answer :) Possible cause would be bent pedal so the screw that pushes the switch doesn't line up. In any case it needs to be pushed in otherwise the light will stay on (assuming its reversed momentary push button), if it's adjusted and pushes it but it does nothing, disconnect the switch and brake light shall disappear. If it doesn't, problem is something else than the rear micro switch.

Thanks to  both who replied.  And yes it was the front brake light switch that was the problem.  Now .........

I an mow remembering about 8 years ago I found that the switch mounting was poorly designed allowing the switch to move away from the handle and thus not activate to shut off.  I fabricated a slightly longer dowel (a tiny part) to activate the switch as this dowel does not have a unique part number and is therefore unobtanium.

I am taking that dowel now and adding a bit of JB Weld to lengthen it hoping this works, If not I will make a longer dowel.

Anyone else been here?  Suggestions?

ps a lot easier than crawling under the bike up and down to adjust the foot brake switch !

I'm having the same issue, such a poor design! If switch is screwed in tight, brake lever locks, otherwise the switch moves... I simply use a cable tie to hold it in place. It's far from perfect but it works. I'm not sure if longer dowel will actually work, the switch will keep moving away. I've heard some people glue them so they don't move.

Hey. that is one great post.  Now I know I am not alone here.  Some good thoughts - Thanks much  !!

Hey Pmaz....  -  the previous fix I made years ago by lengthening the pin in the front brake housing worked well for a while.  I just tried again with a longer pin and it just will not work.  You are right.  The switch just wants to keep moving away from the housing.

And I noticed that I only have one o of the tiny plastic 'pins' that locate the switch - maybe should be 2?  If so the more important one nearest the actuation is of course the one missing.

So, I want to try your cable tie fix.  But not sure where or how you were able to install it to hold that switch?
Help?

Otherwise I will try JB Weld to glue the switch to the sheet metal mounting plate.  If that fails maybe JB Weld the switch directly to the housing above it.
What a stupid design.

This is what I mean with the cable tie:

Thanks Pmaz - got it.  Last night I used JB Weld to attach the switch to the sheet metal bracket.
It solved the problem   All A - OK now.

Thanks for your assistance,

No prob, I just realized now that my image shows it wrong, obviously it wouldn't hold the switch like that but I'm sure you figured it needs to go the other way ;) I was absolutely furious yesterday at that time as my bike was playing up again lol, anyway I edited it now for future readers.

Glad you sorted it [thumbsup]

No problem pmaz - and yes I figured it out from the diagram.  It was stumping me until you showed it going thru that hollow bolt.  Neat  !!
