So me and my buddy who has a 1098 went up to carlisle PA this past weekend for the big bike show. Great ride, on the way back we swapped bikes for a few miles and I got on his 1098. First gear wasnt all that impressive until i romped on it in second. That thing pulled pretty hard. It is a lot different than riding a monster though. He loved my Monster too, he had never ridden a monster before.

Bro I am here at work "working hard" and thought this would be a great read.But....oh well. I want a bit more detail in the ride. I love my Monster, but having a sportbike as well might be a second option for me. I love the new 1098, but would like to know how is the riding position, how is the torque, how is the low speed handling, is the motor built up for just more top-end?

First gear wasn't impressive?  I think you need to twist the throttle.  First gear is very impressive on my 848, so I can only imagine it is on a 1098.

For CountGreffi...keep in mind mine is an 848:

Riding Position: sucks with stock bars, pretty comfy with Heli bars.  I think I'm just the wrong height (5'-9") for the stock set-up.

Torque: Plenty (I also have a MTS1000, and used to have an M900)

Low Speed Handling: It's OK.  Monster or Multi are better...especially the Multi.  It's doable though.

Top End:  The whole bike is built for top end.  Riding slow...especially in traffic...kinda sucks. The bike is awesome though.  [evil]

riding position is all relative. some think it's too agressive, to me, it's just right. Switching from the monster to the 1098 is an adjustment, but not that big of one. I broke my back a few years ago, and I actually like being bent over a lil more ( insert funny anus joke here) I still have the stock bars on it.

The bike has lots of usable power in all the rev range. It kicks in a lil more at about 6500 rpms. Ive done lots of stop and go traffic without a ton of wrist/arm drain. It does feel better when riding it the way it's intended to be ridden.

Even w/o the 14t sprocket.... it does not chug like my m900 or s2r800 did.

At almost 6 thousand miles, I'm on rear tire #3 and front tire #2.

The bike is rock solid. Body weight transfers do not upset the bike at all. I have yet to feel like I had to force the bike to go where I wanted it to go.

One finger front braking, and at they still feel the same as they did 6000 miles ago.

I quite enjoyed the 1098. If I could afford one I would buy one.
About the same time you're dragging your knees through a series of tight left-right-handers on Sunday afternoon, some guy in white shoes is sweating a 3-foot putt. Go figure.

I rode a friends 1098 and I can't really say I was beyond impressed.  It's still a Duc, it pulled nicely but not ridicoulously nice as compared to my bike.  The seat was a wooden board as compared to the couch I ride now.  Mirrors might as well not be there, I never knew I had such nice forearms.  The position was very agro, I'm 6'1 and felt like a gorilla on that thing.

I wouldn't rule the bike out completely as I'm sure it's a beast in it's element (track/twiesty) but from the freeway ride I took, it was just "OK".

You guys talking about it just pulling "nicely" it doesnt sound like you gave it full on throttle i would say it pulls like a bat out of hell anywhere past 1/2 throttle if u can keep the wheel down, just some FHE [roll]

I have given it full on throttle maybe TWICE and it nearly ripped my arms out of their sockets.  But yes the seat is a board and i wish i had a DP Comfort seat.  Of course u should spend most of your time hanging off of it anyways [evil].  Im 5 10 and i find the ergos to be perfect for me

I've put about 2500 miles on the Monster and finally broke the 848 out today.  Low speed handling really is dogshit on the 848 compared to the 695, but that's not the point of the bike.  You want good low speed handling, buy a scooter. :)
