shipping 696 to europe

well i'll be shipping my bike to europe at the end of august. apparently i have to drain the gas and unhook the battery.
getting to the battery is hard as i understand and i am going to ask shadowchaser on tuesday to show me how to do that as well as drain the tank.
but will keeping a tank dry on a 696 for 62 days (in a box on a boat) do damage? should i spray wd40 or something in the tank? is the tank plastic or metal even?

Thoughts anyone?

Getting to the battery is not as hard as people make out. I installed a pig tail on mine over the course of an hour or so. It will require removing the tank covers and then unbolting the tank.

The tank covers are bolted on in a few places. Once the bolts are loosened, the covers slide rearward and then off. Be mindful of how the center plastic strip and the plastic around the fuel cap is incorporated into the cover assembly.

There are 2 bolts that hold the tank, one under the tail and one on the right hand side of the tank. After those bolts are removed, lift the end of the tank up and then slide the whole thing back.

I was confused when I noticed that the left side tank mounting peg did not have a bolt. I thought it might be an error in assembly. However, the parts fiche available from Ducati's website does not show a bolt for that side.

Be careful with the fuel lines. Since you plan to drain the tank, you might want to investigate how to disconnect the lines before removing the tank. Personally I'm thinking about purchasing some quick disconnect fittings for the fuel lines to speed up take down.

The tank is plastic, I don't think anything bad will come from leaving it empty for some time. I'd only worry about the possibility of shellac.

maybe spray fog oil in the carbs? its a product we used to use when winterizing jet skis. check with your shop.
