cheaper alternatives for communication?

i don't need all sorts of fancy bluetooth gizmos and such.  just something that i can communicate with from my bike to another car.  i was looking at midland gmrs walkie-talkies.  there's an additional headset you can buy that mounts to closed face helmets.

that seems like a practical setup with multiple uses coupled with this...

anyone have any experiences with setups like this?

I don't have a setup like that but if you use an earbud with inline mic and cell phone you can communicate with anyone at long range.  the 2 ways have limited range and if you have an unlimited weekend package it doesn't matter how long your on the line.

I surveyed this issue on the board recently and didn't get a lot of feedback -    http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=7185.msg116632#msg116632

Some of the problems with the set-ups that aren't developed for moto use are  issues with wind noise in the mic and earpiece volume and clarity with respect to ambient noise.  Also, most headsets aren't designed to fit under the helmet.  Beware.  I used a corded earbud connected to my cellphone for a while.  The problems made the use so tedious that I dropped it and ordered a Blueant moto set-up.

maybe those mics that are strapped to your throat would work best to cancel background noise.

What I found just though reviews, is that you have to spend  high $$ to get one that gives voice quality you can live with.  Most sound like a tin can phone.  It would be a low cost option though.
