When did red keys start?  I used to ride on a '00 900ie (2 yrs ago) and don't remember a red key...

Thanks!

Not sure but looks to me like they ended in 08 the last ones with red keys being in 07.  My 2008 1098 just came with a key card.  While my old 2007 695 came with the red key.

I think it was 2003, but that could be wrong.

I got a red key with both my 07's (695 and S2R).

A red key came with the '08 S2R 1K.

The first Monster to have one was the 2001 S4.

The rest of the Monster line-up received the immobilizer in 2002.

I'm not sure when the red key/immobilizer was introduced to other Ducati models though.  I'll see if I can find that.

And yes, the red key is being phased out.  My new Hypermotard does not use a red key even though it still has an immobilizer and chipped keys.

So I don't have a red key but I have two copies of my key.  Are you saying that if I want to make a copy of my key I can't?

Actually, it's possible to get a copy of the key made that will work.

Clone might be a better term than copy since you have to replicate the chip info as well.

Here's more info.  Sorry for linking to a VS site.

What's the procedure for copying a key if you DO have the red key?  I'm assuming:

Get a key blank somewhere.
Get the key blank machined properly somewhere.
Use your ignition, and your red key, to program the new key, somehow.

What goes in place of the somewhere and somehow?  I'm sure this has been answered before; I just couldn't find it.

The somewhere is a Duc dealer. As far as getting the ecu to recognize the new key, that's where the red key comes in. There's a programming procedure with the red key.

Thanks for the help Rameses,  I guess I'll just wait and see if I lose one of the two keys I have and then make a couple copies.

To elaborate on my above post, if you need to know the actual programming procedure it is detailed in your owners' manual.

If you don't have your bike's owners' manual, they are available for download at ducati.com.

On the page linked to, there is a list of years on the left side to click on.

Doesn't look like it.  There's a procedure for bypassing the key, using the code and throttle ("Procedure to disable immobilizer engine block through throttle twistgrip").  But nothing about actually programming a new key, except:

QuoteIf you need any duplicate keys, contact the DUCATI Service network with all the keys you have left and your CODE CARD.  DUCATI Service will program new keys and re-program your original keys, up to 8 keys in total."

While this is no doubt true, it leaves inquiring minds wanting more.  I thought that there was a sequence of inserting a black key, inserting a red key, inserting a blank key, inserting the red key again, something like that, that worked with a machined blank, your red key, your bike, with nothing else required.  No?  Did I dream this?
